Punk music was meant to be dangerous, so it's strange to see so many youth advocacy groups embrace that underground culture. I'm glad to see the torch passed to a new generation of young fans, but I wonder if the music could possibly mean as much when it's offered in a parent-friendly environment. And this is where s–t just gets weird. I'd really rather it was a non-issue. I don't want to sit around and contemplate whether I'm a positive roll model. The post also features six songs from the band's new album, Tail Swallower and Dove, which was released this year. You can read the entire entry here.
Brian Cook, frontman for Seattle's These Arms Are Snakes, was recently featured on MTV's Headbanger's Blog. Much like Geoff Rickey's entry, the tone is more like a social essay than your standard blog entry, with Cook touching on a number of different topics that apply to maturity and music:

Brian Cook is the bass player, not the front man. He also played bass in botch.

did anyone else laugh when they read the "parent-friendly environment" line and then noticed all of the edited curse words?

First of all Brian, I'm a big fan of your band, but I don't think you have enough fans (especially young, impressionable ones) to worry about being a role model. Stick to doing your thing and have fun. Who gives a shit what happens from there? 3+ Replies

Man, I love Brian Cook. Anybody ever listen to Roy? Big City Sin is a GREAT album.

I recommend not reading this crappy essay, and instead reading hard science sci fi short stories:

Why doesn't anyone use the term 'book' to describe something going fast anymore? As in, 'did you see that dude? he was fuckin bookin' 8+ Replies

He plays bass for These Arms Are Snakes. Steve Snere is the frontman.

What kind of snakes are the arms? Pythons? Hulk Hogan sucks. His daughter is ugly. She looks like him if he had longer hair and less perky tits. I would not do her.

I think what he had to say was very honest and more or less like a personal diary entry. I think thats pretty cool... I love hearing about what punk rock means to people becuase I sure as hell know it means a lot to me. I'm convinced I would have seriously put a gun to my head many times if punk rock (music and lifestyle) weren't there for me.

LOL, douche talks about punk being dangerous and then uses the term "s-t". Yeah, real dangerous there bud...

I hate when people say "punk is dead". It's a fucking music genre and a subculture, leave it at that; it's not this majestic or divine form us non 70's-80's music fans couldn't even reach. Get over it, it's just stupid music or a stupid outlook. And as for this guy about parental whatever, who cares. | Features

I really get sick of people defining punk rock. It's dead. It was exploited and cheapened. It was ambiguous to start with, and it's even more so now.
