I think the protection of the worker and more emphasis on economic equality is a good reason people associated with punk are sympathetic to socialist policies.

But anyway, don't "just leave your hope at the ballot box."

from a humanitarian standpoint socialism is by far the "punkest" set of ideals. true socialism is about equal rights, equal opportunity, economic equality, demilitarization, and human rights. contrary to what you may believe, what caplitalism tells you, is that socialism is for limited government and strong individuality. there is nothing "punk" about doing whatever you want becuase you want to. that called being selfish, and one of the major reasons the whole punk rock scence is a disgusting abortion of what is says it is versus what it is.

You can start to see this for yourself by realizing that most of the plancks you list were equally the demands of the san culottes starting in the late 1789s.

Its not only a problem of execution that your idea faces either -- ie how do you have a strong party program if everyone is intent upon "strong individuality". Lames appeals to people setting aside selfishness for the "common good" ala Madison or someone like that, don't cut it. Textbook Utopianism.

But its NOT just that problem plagueing you -- its also the case that you can't avoid invoking capitalist norms and sentimentality to get where your list takes us -- whats "equal opportunity" anyway?

There is an inherent compromise of individuality that is associated with allowing the state to regulate commerce. Socialism is inherently not going to be limited government by the very nature of its purpose - the government regulating the markets and industries. Freedoms taken away in the market inevitably affect personal liberties of individuals. You can have equal rights where no one is allowed to do anything.

Capitalism and the Free Market are friends of liberty. The problem most people with socialistic tendencies is that they only look at it from a limited angle. It is certainly well intentioned to be socialistic, but a lot of its practices actually have quite a few unintended consequences. In particular there aren't going to be business owners and propspective employers as you are imagining and there won't be "unemployment" either

I'm sure everyone here should be well versed in the idea of efficiency right now as a means of creating the most value out of available resources possible. The efficient nature of capitalism is what enables those living under it to have such high standards of living as long as they participate by creating value themselves for the consumption of others.

The only big downfall of Capitalism is moral hazards and externalities. However, there is a school of thought amongst Capitalists (including myself) that it is perfectly acceptable to go outside bounds of market forces to control these moral hazards and externalities artificially. That's why we have a government in the first place. Their sole reason for existance is to control these extraordinary circumstances.

This includes things like:
1) Caring for those who can not care for themselves
2) Infrastructure
3) Monopolies
4) Criminal activity
5) Defense
6) Transparency (to eliminating deceptive practices)

The big lie of socialism is that wealth is a fixed good and it is simply a question of how to divide it up. Wealth is entirely created and there is nothing to divide unless you have a system like Capitalism to create it in the first place. If you remove the system that created it, the wealth will dissappear within a generation and we will all be equally broke.

It should be no suprise that the parts of the world with the highest standards of living are all Capitalist based societies.

It should also be no suprise that all of our systems which currently fall outside the scope of capitalism are notoriously inefficient and ineffective. The government is already notorious for being inefficient and ineffective in the areas that it currently adminstrates. Why in the world would we want to turn over more power and more of the economy to a body that has already demonstrated an inability to manage the things it already has? All the wishful thinking in the world isn't going to make public institutions efficient. It's just the nature of the beast.

You must not have gotten the recent memo from reality: know all that noxious "free market" ideology you actually believe in? Turns out its all just lipstick and the capitalists follow their one true imperative -- maintain profitability -- wherever it takes them.

If it means taking over -- or liquidating -- the entire financial sector of the United States -- that's what they do. If it means massive spending in publiic works and infrastructure, that's what they do.

Meanwhile they throw suckers like you a rhetorical bone every once and a while.
