Christie's to hold punk-themed auction next month

Christie's, the leading art business and a fine arts auction house founded in 1766, have announced plans for a punk-themed auction. Set for November 24th, the auction will feature memorabilia from Ramones, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Blondie, the Cure and Patti Smith among others.

"We understand that tastes change, tastes mature. Ten years ago, punk memorabilia probably wouldn't be something we'd be auctioning here. But now, people of a certain age have a certain ability to splurge on this material.

Some choice lots include a rare poster for the famous 1976 Ramones show in London which led to the formation of numerous British punk bands including The Clash, Sex Pistols and others. Various items are expected to command between $300 and $6,000 apiece.

You are definitely overthinking this. If someone thinks that it is cool to have some collectable stuff and has the dough to afford it then what's the big deal?

I can't fathom spending $300 on punk buttons, but that's my personal value viewpoint. I'd rather someone that HAS the dough go out and spend it rather than have it sit in a bank somewhere. Atleast once it is spent it'll go back into the economy and end up as wages both up front at the end of the value chain.

The best thing a rich person can is go spend it on stupid shit like $100 million yachts. That puts thousands of skilled tradesmen to work for several years building it and all of the people below them as well on the supply chain for the parts that go into it. Increased economic activity resulting in employment is much more beneficial to the rest of than charity.
