Kevin Lyman talks Warped 2009: longer sets, less stages

Warped Tour's Kevin Lyman recently spoke to Tom Rowles of NotMTV about the forthcoming 2009 of the long-running tour. Of particular note, the lineup will feature Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, Big D and the Kids Table, Bouncing Souls, Chiodos, Flogging Molly, Lights, NOFX, P.O.S., Shooter Jennings, TAT, The Devil Wears Prada, Thrice, Underoath or Westbound Train.

At the same time, Kevin is promising forty minute sets rather than the traditional thirty minute runs. The show will feature less stages - just one main stage. Kevin is hoping to keep ticket prices identical year-over-year. He also takes a moment to comment on the "whiners" who complain about the lineup no being sufficiently punk.

ha yea. i am proud to announce that 2009 will be my 16th year of boycotting this horrible tour. all hail the larry arms and propagandhi for not participating in this nonsense. anymore in the case of TLA, and always in the case of the mighty propagandhi. this tour is actually far more absurd than ozzfest.

I like 5 bands so far, which is already 2007 and 2008 combined for me.

I went from 96 to 04, skipped 05, went in 06, and skipped the last two shit-infested years.

I'd honestly LIKE to go again. I love outdoor music... let's just hope at least a dozen good bands get added.

Great artist. Hope he does some more straight hip hop. I love his work but some of the stuff on "The Audition" was more focused on branching out than just solid flows. It's still really good but I would love to see him just rap and school 95% of the kids out there.

I really like Brendan Kelly's critique of this tour more than everyone who says it's too commercial or not punk.
Basically, at any given time in punk there's a handful of big underground acts (Bad Religion, NOFX whatever), who may tour during the summer. On those tours they would bring three to four bands with them on tour, bands who couldn't normally do national tours. That's anywhere from 30 to 45 bands on tour over the year doing large club or small theater gigs. Now on warped most of those big bands are packaged and they don't have as many (or the same) openers as would have been done through club gigs. Meaning tons of small bands don't get to tour nationally unless they take a huge financial hit or somehow make Warped Tour (which, for smaller bands can also be a financial hit). But larger bands like it because it's easy and it's only 30 minutes a day on s

i never thought about it that way until i read that a whiles back. it makes sense for big cities like chicago where brendan is from, where all the bands have to stop by. However, i think there is a time and place for the warped tour, especially for those kids out in the boonies who can take a one day road trip and see a bunch of bands. I drove up to the sacramento area and they quoted some kid from my dad's hometown (1 hour east of reno) who drove a few hours to sacramento for the show. but you know nofx does it because it's like a vacation to them. Which is pretty much why they go on tour

That argument's a little outdated. This "handful of big underground acts" isn't as big of a pool anymore, and even here in Chicago what you'd consider to be a bigger band will still only play a 1,300-seat venue at $20 a pop plus service charges, so you're paying $150 to see five shows. And this "shove the opening band down your throat" business has to stop as well. NOFX toured with The Flatliners last year, now Less Than Jake is touring with them in the spring. So I saw them the first time and nothing's really going to change the way I feel about them. It's really not to The Flatliners' benefit to tour with yet another similar band with a near identical fanbase again this summer. They'd be better off on the Warped Tour where there's a different group of potential fans.

My complaint is that he keeps going back to the same old boring well. Bad Religion will play 21st century digital boy and sorrow, Nofx will play the brews, the Bouncing souls will be well....the bouncing souls, Anti-Flag will come out and talk about how each and every 12 year old kid with girl pants on can change the world and shouldn't support Bush(oh ya they cant really talk about that now what now will their gimmick be?) and so on and so on. Set your Goals was one of the only bands worth watching last year, how about getting H20 back out so everyone can see them back in action not just Toronto. How about coaxing Pulley back out they have a new E.P out soon. This lineup is just so Vanilla.

The only way I'll ever go to another Warped Tour is if the Lawrence Arms AND Propagandhi were both on it. i.e. I am never going to another Warped Tour

Plus I've already got all my vacation days scheduled for next year so even if the Lawrence Arms and Propagandhi were drugged and propped up on stage and told that they it was not the Warped Tour and that they were actually playing in Chicago and Manitoba respectively; I still wouldn't be able to go

I didn't get this. Does that mean there'll only be one "dual" stage? Like the rotating sets on the connecting stages? Cuz thats fine. I think we need about 20 touring bands and the rest local. Just saying. And make the day shorter. I don't need 12.9 hours of music. I usually get bored by 6PM and leave... even if I care moderately for the headliners I'm about to miss.

Pretty sure it will be that way still. In the past, unless I'm mistaken, they've had two "main"stages, each of which consisted of two side-by-side stages (one setting up, the other w/ the band playing). So this way, there would only be one "main" stage actually consisting of the side-by-side alternating stages. Good news - you don't have to leave w/ 10 minutes left in Millencolin's set to hike to the other end of the venue to make it to the other main stage before Bad Religion plays. Bad News - if My Chemical Guyliner is playing, you'd better hope there is something good on the local stage, smartpunk stage, etc.........

They could also spend a little more money to have a stage with a rotating floor so they can have one band play while the other is setting up and then just rotate the whole thing inbetween sets so there's only a 5 minute break or less.

more than likely they will just do what they did from 94-98 and have the main stage physical space split by equipment, one band plays one sets up, no different from having two separate stages, one less stage to haul means thousands of dollars saved

I haven't been to a warped tour in a couple years; but having only one stage seems fucking dumb; the multi stage set up discouraged kids from parking their ass at a single stage and encouraged them to walk around (ie, take a break, or check out a smaller stage, ect). The longer set times is fine though.

There's only going to be one MAIN stage. not one stage at the whole show. there's still gonna be a Hurley stage, an Ernie Ball Stage, etc. just not as many as previous years.

I know; but most of the kids only check out the main stages anyways. You're going to find that a lot of people are simply going to try and get a good spot at that stage, and not see what else is going on.

Anyways, I am sure putting on the Warped Tour is extremely hard work, I'm not disagreeing with this statement Kevin Lyman, but come on dude, in this interview you come off like a whiner which you were rebelling against in the start off this interview. Fuck, I would imagine you take home between $500,000-multiple millions every year after the tour is complete, so I really don't think you have anything to complain about.

Also, it is my dream to set up something like the warped tour, shit would be awesome. Just get a bunch of teen bopper type bands and then a bunch of sweet punk bands, and get a bunch of huge corporations to give you money for sponsorships and such. There is no such thing as "selling out" in the music industry anymore. Downloading music killed the whole "sell-out" argument.

the no side stages thing is bullshit.. whether the bands are good or not i think its a great way for a smaller band to gain some exposure, as well as a possible safeguard if the main stage features someone shitty. It also keeps down possible diversity in the lineup

I can't really complain at all....I go every year and it just to hang out with friends that I never get to anymore because they are always on tour and get to see some bands and get incredibly smashed all day... I see who I wanna see and don't who I could care less. I DO however miss the days of Warped Tour Yore when they would have staple Skate/punk bands coinciding with a vert ramp and amazing athletes that went to the music so well. NOFX, Pennywise, Blink 182, Fishbone, Unwritten Law(when they were decent), Dance Hall Crashers, Sick Of It All, and The Descendents all in one day....

I kinda wish they would get some better bands these days other than the staples. I'd really like to see Bad Brains do this shit along with Bad Religion. I also think bands like These Arms Are Snakes and Young Widows would do great at this, and I like how this mix a litt

Food is about the same as last year and gas is EXTREMELY less than it was last year. Grow up Lyman! How about we see some fucking skateboarders on this tour? How about that? I remember when they skipped Houston with the Warped Tour one year, but still had the Warped Skate competition at Southside Skate Park with a couple bands because skating is what mattered! Now it's an Ozzfest for shitty goth-metal bands and washed up old timers.

They should have taken the line-up from Fun Fun Fun in Austin or The Fest and toured with it. Not all the old staple bands, but the killer younger bands and actual indie rock bands, not just punk bands. It'd have been killer.

So, basically...

Less bands. Only 10 minutes more per set. Ticket prices...probably the same? Yes, it's still far cheaper than Coachella or something like that, but the quality / notoriety of acts is way less. Bad Religion + NOFX for $30, and they're playing half of what they played when they toured together? Is it even still only $30?

They're cutting down on the amount of music played by what's gotta be like 90%.

I used to enjoy Warped (for what it was at least) but christ, I went this year for the first time in a couple years and it was a wreck. The whole atmosphere was just more unpleasant than it used to be and any band that wasn't the Myspace pick of the month was pretty much ignored (there were no more than 10 people watching the Dickies)

Unless they added some bands that I just *have* to see I think that I'm done with Warped. I doubt anything could ever top 2003 again anyways, that year was the shit.

Oo man I remember '03 Warped. Good year. Suicide Machines were kick ass. Still, I gotta give it to '01. Possibly cuz it was the 1st one I went to, but Pennywise, Rancid, Bouncing Souls, good AFI, good LTJ, Flogging Molly, Dropkick, Rollins Band, Kool Keith. Hell Ye.

I've gone to warped tour on and off since 2000. Every time I go, I'm reminded of why I hated the Tour so much in the first place. Last year I went because The Bronx were playing and I hadn't seen them in something crazy like 4 years. This year I have to go just for Bad Religion and The Bouncing Souls.. Maybe I'm just whining, but it seems pretty retarded for Kevin Lyman to just brush off the opinions of people that pay good money to see his little charade of a Concert. It's all about the Consumer, right? I also think it's pretty retarded that he'll book lesser known emo, pop/punk and just flat out ridiculous bands on the tour so that they'll get exposure. Yet the only punk bands he'll book are usually the completely generic ones and also the punk bands that have been around for 20 years and obviously have a big enough fanbase to draw at least a few thousand punk kids.

All the while, you're surrounded by the whole lot of Military Recruiters, Veggie hating food-fenders, drunk assholes, Salesmen, overcrowded bathrooms, 5-6 dollar bottles of Water and general wanksters who's Hair Gel you can smell from 20 yards away. Than, when you finally get to see the band you want to you have to wait an extra ten minutes because the people in your City decided that they wanted to watch Underoath for 10 more minutes. Meanwhile, you realize that it was the worst 40 dollars you ever spent and you laugh at the idea of ever going again...
