Year End Lists: Onion AV Club, Stereogum, MTV

It's December, so music critics everywhere are raring to post their "Best of 2008" lists. To prevent every single story on Punknews.org from being another top ten list, we'll periodically summarize some of the more popular/submitted lists for you in a single story.

The first batch includes The Onion AV Club who named Gaslight Anthem, Lil Wayne, The Helio Sequence, Black Mountain, Fucked Up and TV On The Radio. Sterogum posted their 2008 Gummy awards which feature Fleet Foxes, Radiohead, Of Montreal, Islands, Bloc Party and more. James Montgomery from MTV has posted his list which runs from Jay-Z to Tom Gabel, from Beck to Panic! At the Disco and features Death Cab For Cutie, No Age, Deerhunter and The Hold Steady.

Our best of 2008 lists will be coming this month, but more importantly, your best of 2008 will be coming out soon and feature the most voted for albums of the year.

But "Wired Wrong" was my favourite song off Resignation Day.

i did a list for a forum i post on, and i had a top 30 albums list, top 10 eps/mini-albums, and top 6 "others" (live/b-side comps/covers albums etc.), and still had a list of about 20 other records that i know i like, but for whatever reason, haven't listened to enough (usually because they're mostly albums i have to "be in the right mood" to listen to) to decide where to put them in such lists. it's been a real fucking good year!

Fuck the James Montgomery list for the following reasons:

1. MTV. Who still takes that serious in the world of music?
2. Kid Rock's "All Summer Long". Really? Warren Zevon must have turned in his grave for that one. What a lame idea Rock had when making that and it's a true story: "Werewolves of London" and "Sweet Home Alabama" have the same chords! Let's put that in a remix for a song!

OWTH - from the bottom is my number one. The lyrics to that whole damn record eat my insides up, it's heartbreaking pain and remorse wrapped in some of the most unbelievably catchy and poppy music I've ever heard.

Gaslight is my number 2 followed by Banner Pilot.

If Martyr Saint was an honest release, it would be in my Top 10 as well.

250 works. I think there are enough distros to carry it as well as internet wrangling to let that many go. Homemade screenprinted covers that fold out to a poster suitable for framing.

you should give it a few more tries. i found that "gravity wins" is the first song to catch, but the others should soon after. once you get into it, it's pretty amazing. it'll definitely make my top 5. i agree it's not quite as good as paradise--definitely not as catchy--but i actually like it substantially better than CVA (which i also like)

Goldfinger - I'll admit, I bought into them saying they were going back to their old sound, but what they released was so fucking boring and predictable!

Anti-Flag - about every song on that album is about 40 seconds too long. If you've heard it, you know exactly what I mean.

No Use For a Name - I actually liked most of "Keep Them Confused," but "Feel Good Record of the Year" didn't do anything to top it or expand on it.

Alkaline Trio - ugh. A few good songs, but very forgetable.

I actually liked Hello Destiny. It's not their best effort, but people's expectations were just too high. It's their best stuff in a long time.

For me, probably the new Bloc Party, its a good album, but they're getting into too much electronic territory for my liking.

Completely agree. That way we can include albums that weren't reviewed.

It makes no sense that the album has to be reviewed in order for it to be in contention for the top albums list.
For instance; The Playing Favorites has had a listenable album stream on this site since the record came out, but I still can't rate it. That's just stupid.

Yes, I'm gonna keep bitching about this until Aubin fixes it.

Why the Warped Tour is gonna be fun this summer:
I get to do drugs with The Bouncing Souls. I get to golf with Jay and Greg from Bad Religion. I get to get drunk and stagger with Flogging Molly. I get to pick on Justin from Anti-Flag. I get to get my skank on with Westbound Train. I get to argue with Thrice (they supported W and they believe in Noah's Arc...for real). But the most fun I'm gonna have on this tour is hanging out with my old buddies in Underoath. We get to discuss gay marriage, and whether or not dinosaurs existed, and figure out if god is really against shellfish, and whether or not you should be allowed to murder your wife if she is unfaithful (the bible says it's ok).
Seriously, it sucks to be on a tour with a bunch of religious fundamentalists, but that's the reality of festival tours. You get to hang out with a whole bunch of super cool, funny, intelligent, and awesome bands...then there's the Christians. I guess at every college there's one Omega House. Don't worry, I won't make this summer easy for them.

I dont know why, but christians scare me a lot. When I was in school, I'll get approached by students who'll show me picture books about jesus and somehow every time they end by saying "you'll go to hell if you don't believe in god." and they condemn every other religion. Which I honestly find repulsive.

I have one friend who's a hardcore Christian, we don't really talk about it. I respect his opinions and he respects mine (I'm agnostic). He also grows weed and shrooms in his basement and watches internet porn and hides it all from his wife... most Christians pick and choose their sins (God don't really care about drugs and porn right?).

Very few albums really stood out for me this year and this one did. Their first album was so juvenile and this release demonstrated real progress. I was worried about the abundance of instruments, but I didn't feel that it came off as pretentious. I think they did a good job crafting a great album in the vein of rock bands from the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately, the stigma that comes with their name and the crap that was their last album will prevent so many from enjoying it.

Best record overall - The Gaslight Anthem

Unfortunately a lot of stinkers this year - Atmosphere, Street Dogs, Bayside, The Matches, Tom Gabel, The Hold Steady, Panic at the Disco, Flogging Molly, Zebrahead, Anti-Flag all ranked somewhere between mediocre and terrible.

The Killers record was solid

H2O's comeback was great. Less Than Jake's, The Offspring's and Goldfinger's were not.

Did Foxy Shazam come out in 07 or 08? Cause that's going to be my #2 this year if it's 08.
