Year End Lists: Rolling Stone, Emusic, Time, Suicide Squeeze

It's December, so music critics everywhere are raring to post their "Best of 2008" lists. To prevent every single story on Punknews.org from being another top ten list, we'll periodically summarize some of the more popular/submitted lists for you in a single story.

The second batch comes from some diverse places; first up, Rolling Stone Magazine which named TV On The Radio, Lil Wayne, Metallica, Vampire Weekend, The Magnetic Fields, Of Montreal and The Academy Is.... Time Magazine also named Lil Wayne, Metallica and TV On The Radio as well as Girl Talk and Kanye West. Indie digital retailer eMusic named Gaslight Anthem, The Kills, Blacklisted, Jay Reatard and more. Finally, the folks at Suicide Squeeze put together a list made up of the choices of artists on the label, other label folks, and people at SS. Their list runs quite a range, from No Age to Dillinger Four and more.

Our best of 2008 lists will be coming this month, but more importantly, your best of 2008 will be coming out soon and feature the most voted for albums of the year.

what i don't get is why people would buy his fucking album. the only reason i can come up with is that they do not know how to use the internet to download for free. probably it's why he's raking in the actual money sales. my boss gave me that look when i said i hated rap. she went "oh im definitely buying l'il wayne he's so unconventional" and told me "you probably hate rap because you've never actually listened to it." should i poison her coffee?

I've chucked more than a couple of dildos at bands...

It's fun because only one of them acknowledge that it was an actual dildo. I remember the time my friend almost got into a scuffle because the bass player he hit in the shoulder was....yeah...he was black and went apeshit because he thought someone was throwing bananas at him.

I've seen it so many times. Them doing something stupid, getting told off by a single guard/officer/civil person, reaching for their shoe and just start beating the shit out of that person with their show and of course stopping when a single more person chimes in.

I think i've seen a 50+ lady reach for their shoes more than a hundred times.

But gypsies are far more hilarious, how fucking great is it that a scam they've done for over 50 years still works? They're just a few men and 15+ women, walk into a supermarket and the 2-3 men start brawling like crazy on the floor while ten of the women just start acting worse than scared hens and just scream as if the sky was falling. Of course they cause a big enough ruckus so that it's overheard in the whole supermarket and all the staff gets called in

i was waiting for my pizza yesterday at some parlor, and the radio was playing a song from the new metallica. and at first i was kinda chuckling and thinking what a joke it was that people are thinking this is a comeback but by the end of the song i was really into it. the super long outro was a fucking rager.

Show him some good pre 2005 midwest stuff. Those are still "new" bands.

I don't know about 05 but I could absolutely recommend John Henry West, Friction, Christie Front Drive, Boy's Life... there are tons of great bands that are largely forgotten.

So yesterday we got hit with one of the worst blizzards and I stupidly went to work for a few hours. I left early, but got stuck three times on the way back to my apartment. I even crashed into a tow truck as welll. I had to park my car a block away because the street was not plowed. Now my car won't start and I'm a day and a half behind on getting my finals done. Fuck my life.

The plus side to that is that you're still warm instead of frezzing. If anything, it's tornadoes that are more bothersome than rain.

I've gone down to San Diego quite a few times, but never during the winter, so I wouldn't know. But I can't imaging it being too different from L.A. since it's only like 2-3 hours away, so yes, our weather rocks. Like stated, Christmas morning (and I'm talking 4 am morning) I'm in my basketball shorts that I sleep in and I'm doing just dandy in them.

Actually we always have bad cases of ice much more than snow, especially with the amount of hills in this state. Just walking to my mailbox was treacherous today. That video is pretty funny though, the first car hit just about everything imaginable.

I think a lot of the reason he's a critical darling (of sorts) is that he's very different from most of mainstream rap right now. He's a personality; he's weird as fuck. He's probably crazy, and it definitely comes through in his lyrics. He's not afraid of breaking from the stereotypical rap persona. There's nothing more disenchanting than the same ol', same ol'. I won't argue that he's always on point but he's definitely capable of putting together a mean tune, he's got great punchlines that you don't see coming and he's an absolute monster in terms of recorded output.

Back in like '98 or '99 Lil Wayne was the biggest joke in the world. When he started getting all this critical attention I was baffled, I listened to the Carter III cuz someone I know recommended it. It sounded like he always did an annoying voice with marginal talent showing throw a lot of shitty rhymes and the occasional good beat.

I lived in a dungeon apartment under a printing press with 4 other dudes. I slept in a loft over the living room couch. There were no right angles anywhere in the house. I'm 6' tall, I could palm the ceilings.

The house had 3 windows. One of them was a tiny basement type window, the other 2 were near the front door. When it snowed, it was impossible to get out.

Yes. My first apartment (sort of a row house actually) was punk as fuck. We had lots of kegs, did beer bongs and puked in the backyard, had a pot plant on our coffee table... broken windows, holes in the wall, skateboard tricks in the living room and we even has pink flamingos in the front yard that some asshole stole.... oh and even though we were like 18/19 years old and had over 30 keg parties (sometimes on a stupid days like a Thursday), we never once had shit stolen or had the cops called on us (but I'm sure the neighbors fucking hated us!). Ahhh... the good old days.

For me, there will always be three untouchable bands within the genre: sublime, Guttermouth and The Pogues. As for sublime, what they achieved in just one album will never be replicated. The reason why punk rock made it into the 2000s can be partly attributed to that band.
