Telegraph reunion show planned for March

Detroit's Telegraph have announced a March 13th reunion show featuring the final lineup of the band. That includes Jeff Sanguis, Mark Penxa, John Reynolds, Matt Van (Uncle Kracker, Parka Kings), Chris Brock, Steve K, and Derek Grant (Suicide Machines, Alkaline Trio)

i've been there many many times, they can squeeze in 300+ total people when they take out the tables in the bar. i think the eagles of death metal had 350 or more people

I'm running their MySpace page, and just got off the phone with Sanguis... that is 100% not true. Nothing Suicide Machines will be happening at this show.

its just a wish. i know dan lives in japan, but derek will be there and so will royce (cause his brother is in telegraph i heard). Jay will obviously be there too. Its not that much of a stretch...

Royce and Sanguis are not brothers. It was a joke that both of them played up for a while. Royce talked about it in a few interviews. I think they were roommates or in a band together and it became some kind of long running thing to say on stage.

When the fuck was Derek in the band? I have the original Skolars album, and I think he was thanked and that's about it.

Here's hoping they don't do any of their lame pop rock stuff.

He was in it really early, then played the live tracks on the Quit Your Band EP, then re-joined in '98 or '99.

He was on the "lame pop" album, Switched On, which is so lame it's somehow my all-time favorite album.

Well, good for you. We have differing tastes.

To me, this band just reminds me of that period when ska bands all realized that MTV and the radio had dropped the ska thing and they all tried to go "pop". Meh.

it was more that they were tired of playing the same type of songs and wanted to move on. they had been a ska band since most of the guys were 16 and by their early 20's didn't have their hearts into playing ska anymore

I understand that, but its a little suspicious when so many bands either broke up or completely changed their style all at the same time. Which also happened to coincide with the end of the mainstream's fascination with ska.

I'm thinking Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, The Hippos, The Impossibles, Telegraph, Suicide Machines (they had their awkward mod rock album around this time) and so many more than have rightfully forgotten.

That era was killing me. Who else did that shit......let's see, Buck-O-Nine (Libido), Bosstones (Pay Attention), Blue Meanies (Post Wave), Gadjits, My Superhero, Edna's Goldfish (split, then started Reunion Show). Motherfuckin ska bands were changing styles left and right. Good to see some of them back, and not messin with their sound.

the post wave was an incredible album.

honestly not every band is mustard plug and can keep playing the same type of songs forever. ska had pretty much dominated the music i listened to from 94 until 99 or so personally that time period was great for me because it occured as i was growing out it. go back and listen to some of those albums and you'll find that they are a lot better than you remember them being

With the exception of Edna's Goldfish (bleh), I love all those bands albums when I put them on now... both the old ska stuff, and the non-ska.

The Post Wave IS phenomenal. I definitely prefer that to Pave The World and Kiss Your Ass Goodbye.

You seem to be implying that ska music lacks depth.

I would present the Slackers as Exhibit A of a band that has continually played ska throughout their career and consistently find new ways to make it fresh and viable. If a ska band has trouble writing interesting songs, I'd say that's evidence of a boring, stagnant band, not a boring, stagnant genre.

Pay Attention wasn't a departure from ska. It had as much ska as the one before it.

It just had atrocious production. And was obviously the product of a band who was deciding whether or not to break up or not.

No way. They did another album after that before they "broke up." They were coming off a huge record; why would they be thinking of breaking up?! They thought that record was going to be huge. The production is great, too. It's the same team that did most of the records and it's sonically not that different from Let's Face It.

I also have bad memories of the media encouraging these bands' shitty new directions and writing condescendingly that ska was just something that kids grow out of. Fuck that.

The Post Wave sucked. The only decent song on there was Camero Man. The Blue Meanies are another band that tried to be the Beatles and failed. I can remember laughing at how haughty their press release sounded, describing their inflated ambitions to create the perfect pop song.

if you have ever heard the version of rude girl on the first american skathic comp, that's derek singing. he sang for the band when they were called Your Inlaws and then for a little bit after they changed names. he came back as the drummer for the last couple of years

Jack, do you know what time Tim Barry is going on at Small's in April? I bought Louie CK tickets for that night but that should be over by 9:30 or so, so I am going to try to make the TB show afterward.

the times i've seen him play at smalls he's gone on around 11 or 12 so you should have plenty of time. i'm jealous, louis ck and tim barry in the same night is incredible
