Green Day release lyrics for "21st Century Breakdown"

While their first single is not (officially) set to appear till later this week, Green Day has posted the lyrics for the entirety of their forthcoming album. The record is titled 21st Century Breakdown and is due out May 15, 2009.

Nor is "21 Guns" a Good Riddance cover, "Static Age" a Misfits cover, or "Modern World" a Pogues cover. Hopefully the music is more original than the song titles.

I thought so too about this album, concept albums are usually a one time deal for rock bands because they usually fuck it up and get bored of the concept and "artistic vision". But you summed it up perfectly, who cares?

This is like the opposite of hype, every story I read about this album gets me less and less excited for the albums release. Green Day is trying way too hard to be an arena rock band. I liked it better when they didn't try but they were still playing arenas (Dookie-Warning era).I don't want a sprawling rock opera super album from Green Day. Does anybody who has been a longtime fan actually think this is the best musical approach for them to take?

Not me. I hated American Idiot, the last thing I wanted from Green Day was the same thing over again. I miss the days of their bratty carefree pop-punk.

Agreed. I've defended this band on plenty of occasions. No more. Fer christsakes, either put out or get out! Screw all this build up, it soooooo pretentious without any of the validity.
Plus it's another concept album, this would have been fine if there were some regular albums in between, just sayin....

Umm Horseshoes and Handgrenades is already a band, Dillinger Four already wrote the riffs for American Idiot, Know Your Enemy is a song by Rage Against The Machine AND The Code, the 21st Century shit was already overdone by Bad Religion, and you suck. Fools.

Billie Joe was never quite Elvis Costello, but is it me or are his lyrics really, well, poor? Looking through this, it's just a series of words that rhyme and sound a bit edgy. Some of GD's older stuff had some awesome little one liners and nice turns of phrases, but this just feels a bit hollow.

lyrics seem like Rise Against on a downer...but I havent read them all. Looking forward to hearing the album.

at the show last night they were handing out 'Playbill' style programs that included all the 'Acts' and new songs and other pic and info. on the back it included all the lyrics to all the new songs. was pretty clever and well done. when i got home i was reading through some of the lyrics, and while they are not revolutionary and groundbreaking per say, they were overall good lyrics and would liken them to the style of Amer. Idiot. long gone are the days of writing about pot, girls, and putting 409 in your coffeemaker, but the band is more mature now and his lyrics reflected that.

i love how every jerk off on here pre judges.. To release the lyrics before the record is out, is pretty brave.. Those songs are class. Murder City / Desperate sounds like something off Nimrod..

P.S. Horseshoes & Handgrenades is a total HIves rip-off, musically speaking.

That said, I'll probably still buy the new album. I went to the Fox Theatre show, so I'll probably be on the DVD. I'm not supporting, I'm supporting people putting me in DVDs.
