Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 awarded for use of Octopus prop (by PETA)

In one of the more unusual press releases coming out of PETA, Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus has received a Compassionate Citizen Awards from PETA for the band's use of an expensive prop octopus in a recent video shoot. Mark explained via Twitter:

We paid nearly $1,000 for a movie prop octopus for a photo shoot so a real one doesn't have to die. [D]o [I] get an award?

PETA frequently recognizes advertisers and filmmakers who use animatronic models and computer-generated imagery instead of real animals. The group points out that octopi are intelligent and sensitive animals who have been observed cooperating and communicating with each other. Hoppus will receive a framed certificate and a card signed by peta2 staffers.

I imagine it would cost a LOT more than a grand to obtain an octopus and have it for a photo shoot. PETA: when we're not busy tricking you into letting us kill your pets, we reward bullshit covers for economic decisions.

There's a lot that's not readily available on DVD. And even if they're not very good, they usually have redeeming qualities. I watched House on the River a couple nights ago--not very good.

How does that save the environment and comply with PETA policies? How about rewarding someone in the field who actually makes a difference. Not saying Mark is a bad guy & he probably was thinking of how damaging the use of a real octopus would be (or the expense) but PETA could concentrate on more real issues.

i don't often find myself agreeing with blink 182 many times, if at all, but i'll have to agree with them here. octopi really are kickass creatures. they're incredibly hard to even keep in captivity because they always find a way to escape aquariums. THEY ESCAPE FROM THEIR TANKS. if runaway octopi aren't awesome, i don't know what is.

Fucking idiot. There are plenty of organizations that work to better the conditions that humans live in and only a handful that do it for the animals. Animals are tortured and treated as the lowest of the low almost everywhere in the world, so boo hoo if a few people are trying to make it stop for those who can't protect themselves from us.
