I find it often tied with Nimrod.

It's funny how much you dislike Bob Dylan, but love that album. That album should basically be called, "We Really Like Bob Dylan. A Lot."

I completely see where you're coming from with that, honestly. At times it's just hard to stomach. It's hard to really why it is he became so popular. He couldn't play guitar all that well, and I don't think anyone really thinks his voice is the greatest.

Probably just the time frame, I guess.

Dylan was an iconic figure in mucical history.
He wrote songs that were pivitol in the translation taboo political and social issues, into a form that challanged the conventional standards of his time. Those same issues are prevalent in punk rock today.
He can't play that well, and his vopice isn't the best; just like every kid in 1980 who picked up a guitar and a mic, in order to be heard.
Like him or not, he paved the way just like Wayland Jennings & Jonny Cash.
Punk wouldn't exist today without the folk & early country icons.

No, I think Dookie is actually the best GD album.

It's their very under appreciated masterpiece. But I think Kerplunk or Dookie is at the top of that list still.

woooft, that's a sweeping judgement. the guy has such an amazing back catalogue. there's a ream of shit, there's no denying that - but in amongst all that there are moments of pure and utter brilliance. especially in alot of the late 60's early 70's stuff. 'it's alright ma' for example is mindblowing. and his phrasing during that period totally revolutionised pop music - just look at the stuff the beatles and the stones were releasing around the same time and you can hear what i'm on about.

dylan's lyrics were always great during the 60s. even during dylan's shitty 80s, a lot of his lyrics were still good. and now, everything, musically and lyrically, is up to par again - not as good as the 60s - but good. it's easier to understand how great his lyrics are if you look at what other guys were putting out in the mid 60s, and then realize he was taking old blues and folk songs and pairing them with surreal images and stark political stuff, which was unheard of then and difficult to pull off now.

Different strokes for different folks I say. However, most of his stuff after the mid 70's though is trash.

You can only play that stuff for so long before you get bored, I guess. I don't know, I've always liked where they were heading, and am pretty excited with this.

No one cared when they released Insomniac or Warning, which were albums they really cared about, and you can tell. I'm not saying they don't care about the rest, but I really remember seeing them during the Warning tour, and they all seemed happy with what it was they were playing.

I think from the perspective of a musician it is important to keep trying something new; and that's why you've gotta respect that they seem to be trying to do that with each album... even since dookie... each album has had a different vibe y'know.

I think their two most ambitious were Nimrod and Warning, honestly. I play a few instruments myself (not well, mind you) but even I can respect that thoroughly. But I always considered American Idiot to be Dookie 2.0

yea, warning is brilliant. I don't think i really appreciated it at the time either. the transition from nimrod to warning was huge... i mean from an album that had 'take back' and 'platypus' to an album that had a tune like 'misery' - that's a big change.

Strange to think of A.I as Dookie part 2. I always felt that Dookie represented a pure energetic outburst of all this youthfull brilliance. Whereas A.I is totally more pointed, considered and ambitious. If you told a Dookie era Billie Joe he'd be penning a rock opera with 7 minute songs in the future, he'd have told you to fuck off! haha

Haha, then I would point out that when they played "Knowledge" like it was like 12 minutes long.

I think of AI as more of them pointing that pissed off edge at something directly, and bottling it up.

When I first heard Warning, I really felt they were the greatest band of all time. Misery is fucking awesome. So is Church on Sunday.

yea, certainly the anger on A.I is alot more pointed; it's a leap in a sense because previously billie joe's anger has been directed inward and towards alienation of the self as opposed to disolusionment with a proto-fascist government. it's certainly a sign of maturity... although his political knowledge still lacks any real depth, but alas, his heart is in the right place and that's what counts!
have you got the 'tune in tokyo' live cd from the warning era? short but sweet, and it certainly captures the vibe of that album. think my fav is actually the title track - or maybe macy's day parade. they were both so understated, and almost sombre

Macy's Day Parade is a classic track, and too many people slept on it.

Tune in Tokyo was great to have. I like it so much more than Bullet in a Bible, because it's more...I don't want to say reckless, but definitely more youthful and aggressive and fun.

I can relate a lot more to his musings of alienation than I can his misdirected political agenda. I can't say I don't enjoy thoroughly the depth of instrumentation that they have, though.
