Government Warning posts new songs, European tour dates

Richmond, VA's Government Warning have posted three new songs. "Endless Slaughter", "Urban Warfield" and "Glued" will all appear on Paranoid Mess, which will see a release via No Way/Grave Mistake Records in America and Paco/La Vida Es Un Mus Records in Europe. No release date is given, but it is said here the record will first be available at No Way Fest 3, which takes place on June 19-21 in Richmond, with a wider release soon after.

The new songs can be heard at their myspace page. Government Warning last released Arrested [7 inch] in 2007.

The band also has some European tour dates coming up with fellow Richmonders Wasted Time.

Man, I was all about Government Warning until I saw them live for the second time. The singer went on some macho bullshit power trip, beating his bare chest and screaming "Mosh, faggots!" They also covered the Descendents' "I'm Not a Loser" and didn't change the homophobic lyrics at the end. Watching a bunch of punks in 2008 yelling "Go away you fucking gay" was extremely disappointing. Plus they wrote that one song about how being politically correct is apparently uncool.

So basically, fuck this band. They make some fantastic music, but in the end I can't tolerate their bullshit.

That is really unfortunate to hear, there is a thread of anti-PC mentality or whatever in 80's hardcore and revivalists. I mean just look at Fear. As much as I love Descendents, I can't listen to that song because it is so cringe worthy. I think the anti-PC mentality is a reactionary movement to the highly poltical hardline scenes of the 90's.

Being anti-PC in itself isn't so bad, and I totally understand why a lot of groups would react against all that wacky hardline '90s stuff. But yeah, when you add all the other unfortunate stuff GW has done, they come out looking like idiots. So much modern punk is intellectually and socially progressive, and it's a shame that GW isn't a part of that. Because their music is kick ass, just like the rest of that Descendents song.

I agree, I totally think sometimes people take political correctness beyond practical application. as long as the motives for your actions are treating others with due respect that is fine but in no way can I find someone calling me a faggot respectful.

I don't think you're going to find a scan online. It's from the April Fools 2008 issue with Johnny Rotten on the cover; it was a really good issue if I remember correctly it had the GW interview, Off With Their Heads, Fy Fan and Age. And embarrassingly enough, I fell for the April Fools joke.

I never found those lyrics to be homophobic....I thought he was saying that that was shit people said to him. Calling him gay and a homo and whatnot. So the guys bullying him were the homophobic assholes, not the narrator of the song. So I don't see why they would need changing.

The lyrics are also fine with me, but there's a difference when it's covered live. A bunch of 15 yr old kids yelling "Go away you fucking gay" would piss me off. There are plenty of other songs about alienation and/or by the Descendants that might not be mistaken for homophobic by someone listening. Especially if it came after the singer yelled, "mosh, faggots".

does anyone remember when Bill Stevenson was in a band called Nig Heist? will you stop listening to anything he did cause it was insensitive or offensive? it's an awesome song homophobic or not, and has been one of my favorites since I first heard it when I was 14. is everyone on here from Berkeley?

And I have no problem with the original lyrics because it seems obvious to me that's not the singer's personal view, but if some other asshole used that out of context to be homophobic because it's not cool to be PC, I will take issue with that.

it comes down to freedom of belief. racism and homophobia are not factors when i choose what to listen to. there are a lot of extreme leftist political bands i enjoy a lot, but don't agree with their beliefs. fifteen is one of my favorite bands, but i do not see eye to eye with jeff ott on a lot of things. so yes i feel no shame listening to a band like skrewdriver, and i would enjoy their entire catalog if the music wasn't such a decline once the message turned into white supremacy. i'm sure you could point out my hypocracy and inconsistancies on certain bands and the such if we really got into it.

and tongue in cheek or not the descendents were not the band you're trying to make them. they were not politcally correct, and wrote some offensive songs. the only reason words have such power is because people place them as taboos.

I don't know the singer, so maybe he's a dick maybe he's not, but asking people to mosh is kind of douchey anyway so he probably is. But people get offended too easily nowadays and throw around false accusations of homophobic and racist too much. My friends and I have called eachother "faggot" before, it has nothing to do with homosexuals, the same way calling something gay doesn't mean that I think there is anything wrong with homosexuality. They're just words that have taken on new meanings from the meaning they originally started out with depending on the context it's used in.

Basically, calling someone a faggot because they don't want to "mosh" is not the same thing as calling someone a faggot because they are a homosexual. One is homophobic, one is not.

Ironic considering your user name and the widely believed origins of the actual term "mosh" ... but incase that goes over your head, here is a history lesson:

"The term "mosh" came into use in the early eighties American hardcore scene in Washington, D.C. Vocalist H.R. (Paul Hudson) of the band Bad Brains, regarded as a band that "put moshing on the map," used the term "mash" in lyrics and show stage banter to both incite and describe the aggressive and often violent dancing of the scene. To "mash it up" was to go wild with the frenzy of the music. Due to his affected Jamaican-accented pronunciation of the word, fans heard this as mosh instead."

That's how I've always taken it. It's hard for me to believe a band like the Descendents in the the early 80's punk scene would be calling other people "homos" and "gay" since I'm sure they received those same insults at some point in their lives. I have always taken those lyrics as Milo repeating the things he heard on a regular basis. I could be wrong, but that's how I've always viewed it.

Can't wait for this fucking record. If the rest of the album is anything like the 3 songs they posted, this will prob end up being my favorite record of the year. Also one of the best live bands I have seen in the past ten years, and I think i've seen these dudes close to 10 times at this point.

The ageless punk rock debate about whats ok for people / bands to say will go on forever. Its nothing new. If you dont like what they have to say, thats cool, turn it off. But, let me save you the time and tell you to also not check out: Adolescents, Descendents, Big Boys, Dead Kennedys, Meatmen, Fear, Angry Samoans... If those bands are your cup of tea however, give the new govt warning a shot.
