Epitaph Records: home to Frank Turner, and a bunch of bands that are not Frank Turner.

This may be the worst thing on Epitaph and these days, that's saying a lot.

It's hard to believe that it's been almost two years since one of the most sincere, honest, beautiful and heartwrenching CD's was released, that being Yellowcard's 3rd major label release, Paper Walls, which came out on Juy 17th, 2007. At the time, people took Ryan's talent for granted and the release never got the push it needed. While the band gave us the gift of a new release, they also punished us by stopping being a functioning band shortly after. The video for Light Up The Sky still gives me chills. I think they were just ahead of their time, I'm glad that I was right there for part of it, I was front and center and a true fan, I was more than just a fan, I was part of their ride to the top. Sadly, it was a ride that I didn't want to get off. Since that time, I've heard some bands that can write a catchy tune but they just can't pack the one-two punch of Ryan and the Yellowcard boys dealt, so after hearing the newest pop-punk band that is trying to make it big by stealing "Ocean Avenues" riffs, usually the first words out of my mouth are "Well, it's no Yellowcard, that is for sure...". Eventually my friends just told me "Enough about Yellowcard, I'm not kidding just stop it" so, I'd just keep it to myself, I was hoping that some band would knock my socks off, but it never happened. Well, I was surfing the web and I heard a song that had a vocal part that goes "we will rock you, shock you, drop you and make you waaaant it" and it just stuck in my head for days. Needless to say, I ran home and googled it and the band that penned those lyrics that just hit home (it was like they were reading my mind!) was The Higher. I'm proud to say that I am a fan of The Higher and I'm so looking forward to thier 4th release "It's Only Natural" coming out on Epitaph Record Label on June 23rd, 2009.

I'm embarrassed to be from the same town as these guys. The sad thing is, I have a friend who's the same age as me (26) that is totally in love with them. I would think 26 is old enough to know better. |
