Videos: The Gaslight Anthem with Bruce Springsteen live at Glastonbury

Many of you have already heard about the collaboration between the Gaslight Anthem and Bruce Springsteen at this past weekend's Glastonbury Festival. Springsteen joined the band onstage to perform the title track from their sophomore LP, The '59 Sound. Vocalist/guitarist Brian Fallon performed again with the Boss later in the day during his headlining set for the song "No Surrender".

Agreed. Like them or not, they are still a bunch of guys who suddenly shot to fame, are playing a huge festival in England, with what looks like thousands singing along, when an artist they love and admire plays with them. That's a dream come true.

I certainly wouldn't say "inevitable". What's crazy to me is that these guys went out and did everything Against Me! ever wanted to do and they did it faster and they did it without being on a major label or having big management. It's pretty remarkable, really.

well I figured there was a pretty good chance it would eventually happen, considering Bruce Springsteen's comments about them, and the similar music styles, and being from the same hometown helps a lot too
but you're right, they've been extremely successful in what they've done in such a short amount of time

Lyrically Gaslight borrows Bruce's style but anyone that thinks The '59 Sound sounds like Born To Run, or Darkness on the Edge of Town or Magic is drunk. They both write rock n roll and there might be some similarities musically here and there but Springsteen didn't invent his style either, he borrowed to make his own, just like the Ramones or the Clash.

I see where you're coming from and while you can make that claim with the Ramones and Gaslight (you can even make it with a lot of the late Beatles recordings) but Springsteen is with out a doubt Rock and Roll in it's most classic sense. Not every song maybe but a good portiojn of the early stuff and most of the live show.

What I often tell most of my punk or metal friends that hate Bruce is that they aren't fans of rock and roll, they are fans of rock, and Bruce Rolls too much for them. Rock is something to jump up and down to and shake your head. Roll is something to sway to. Rock and Roll is somethign to shake up and down, jump, and sway; to dance to.

Springsteen can make you dance. Ramones and Gaslight cannot.

This is song fits right into either side any Eddie Cochran 45 from the 50s.

I cared about Bruce way before, and I'm sure other people did. Mike Ness of Social Distortion collaborated with him on his solo record years before Gaslight came out. I put Bruce's album on my 2007 year end list for this site and not Gaslight, so bam disproved you right there

Born in the USA was one of the first cassettes I owned when i was like 9 years old. I think the whole Springsteen bandwagon thing is a lot cooler than "I like old country, like Johnny Cash and Hank WIlliams" bullshit. The Boss is the shit, he wrote a song about my hometown (Youngstown) and his lyrics are more "punk" than most of the shitty wannabe punk bands out there.

Springsteen was respected by the punk community from its inception. The problem was it was more the punk rock bands than the punk rock fans. By the time punk took off in America for the suburban kids Bruce was already between The River and Born in the USA, and punk fans confused him for corperate rock. But that's because they're stupid.

The '75 to '78 Springsteen was a huge fan of the New York scene and the scene was a fan of him. This was the Springsteen that wrote songs for Patti Smith and the Ramones. The Springsteen that was in studio with the Dictators and Graham Parker (more new wave than punk I know). The Springsteen Henry Rollins said he was a fan of, and Joe Strummer went out of his way to recommend to people.

Any Punk fan that doesn't like a '78 Springsteen bootleg isn't a Punk fan. They just think they are.
