Oral history of Toronto punk coming in September

Bongo Beat Books has announced plans to release Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History of Punk in Toronto. Written by Liz Worth and due out in September, the book follows seminal southern Ontario bands including The Viletones, Diodes, Teenage Head, The Forgotten Rebels and more.

The book will include a bonus DVD and you can find more details here.

seriously, like when's someone going to make a documentary about DC or LA. oh and there should also be a documentary where they talk about how bad brains were the best band in the world.

American Hardcore covers DC and LA pretty well. They also praise the Bad Brains. There's also an extra movie in the "Punk: Attitude" DVD about the LA scene.

I got that Punk:Attitude DVD coming via Netflix and this has me a little more excited about it. I just hate that most punk documentaries act like the 70's scene was all that matters and everything fizzled out over the 80's.

honestly i was pretty disappointed in punk:attitude. westway to the world was great, but punk:attitude was more of a don lettsdown

agreed. Punk: Attitude pretty much completely ignored LA and DC. In my opinion those punk scene swas as vital/important/influential as the NYC or London scenes.

I didn't know that existed but they are one of my all time favorites. The history written in the liner notes of the unboxed set is awesome.

i got some bootleg dvd-r off of ebay of it, it hasn't seen a proper dvd release (which i can't understand why) and the vhs is oop. it is hilarious and features videos from them and vom as well.

It's a book, but Dance of Days does a really nice job of chronicling the DC scene.

Anybody read "We've Got the Neutron Bomb" besides me? I thought that book was awesome. So was "Please Kill Me."

I'll probably check this out and discover some sweet untapped Canadian bands, eh.

I read that book and then spent the better part of the next four years searching for that Screamers bootleg discography, since that was before anyone I knew had high scpeed internet. Fuuuuuck was it worth the wait when I finally found it though.

I kinda think Forgotten Rebels suck. This kid Julian from the scene in Toronto is working on a movie about the hardcore scene since around 2004 that's called Generation: Hardcore Punk in Toronto. He got some pretty cool interviews with the guys from Fucked Up and Career Suicide, as well as some smaller bands, promoters, and the guy who owns the punk record store. Should be pretty good.

so you think i'm a loser. what, just because i have a stinking job i hate, women don't respect me, and the entire city curses the day i was born? well, that might mean 'loser' to you, but let me tell you something.

every day when i get up, i know it's not gonna get any better until i go back to sleep again. so, i get up, i have my watered down coffee and costco brand granola bar, get into my dad's car with no suspension and a change of oil 4 months overdue, and fight traffic for an hour and change all for the privilege of putting together cheaply designed calendar pages on the shitty community college student planners of idiot clients like you.

i'll never become a famous artist like i thought i would. i'll never know the touch of a beautiful girl. and i'll never again know the joys of going out to a weeknight show or drinkin' at cantab on a wednesday night because i live 5 minutes away from it and i come back every night at 8 or 9pm and fall asleep to the sound of everybody else in the boston area having fun because their work is a T stop away.

but i'm not a loser. because despite it all, me, and every guy like me who didn't get to be what he wanted to be, are still out there doing what we don't wanna do, 60 hours a week for life.

and the FACT.....that i haven't put a GUN IN MY MOWF, you PUDDING OF A CLIENT.....MAKES ME A WINNER.

i think it's incredibly sad how strongly i identify with al bundy now (aside from the politics/gender inequality issues)

like the absolute perfect moment is when he opens the store and i think bud and kelly are like spying on him or some shit, and all he does is just sit in the middle of the floor all day with his head in his hands.

that's pretty much my day.

well, a mix of that and ari gold from entourage, but without the money, power, hot wife, perks, awesome cars or knowing celebrities. so it's basically just me being fucking miserable every day and yelling and swearing a lot.
