Rock Band to allow independent bands to submit music

Rock Band has announced a major new addition to their online track sales program. Later this year, the game will allow bands to upload their own music for the game. A given band or artist can submit their music to freelance developers or develop their own "track charts" in house. (Track charts are the split up set of notes that you need to match with your plastic instruments in the game.)

So far, Harmonix developers have made about 700 songs available to download and play on the game. Those titles have sold a combined 50 million downloads through the game. Sub Pop Records has already announced plans to submit songs from its upcoming fall releases as well as its bigger releases from the past two years.

"I (now not so) secretly really wanted this song to be in Rock Band or Guitar Hero after I wrote it. I even emailed Asian Man Records about it! I'm honestly surprised neither of those bands has been made available before. Especially LTJ. They've been featured on "Billyuns and Billyuns" (hello Carl Sagan!) of videogames, and I've even heard them during Fox NFL broadcasts.

I say make a Gainesville Pack featuring bands like LTJ, HWM, AM! and other bands that we can abbreviate into Instantly Recognizable acronyms.

I would assume it involves some hefty programming and sound editing. Something that only labels like Victory and Sub Pop could really afford. Oh well...

Here's a more in-depth article that gives more details about how the whole thing will work. My basic understanding:

- Artist/label/producer/whoever has access to the masters for a given song signs up for the Rock Band Network for $99/year
- Download tools that help chart the song (I think there may be some sort of midi conversion or something)
- Make song and post it online so other RBN members can download it
- Song goes into "peer review" where other members of the RBN can vote and give feedback
- If song is deemed good enough, it'll be posted to the Rock Band store at a price between $0.50 and $3.00.

The current details are that this is only being done on 360 with "some" songs possibly making their way to the PS3 store. I'd wager that

I've owned a guitar since I was 15 and know nothing.
Lately I have been thinking about learning to play it though, since well, I have nothing else better to do.
The only problem with this is, Im pretty sure Im tone deaf, so I dont know how well this is going to work out..

I really like "I Am You." I'm about halfway through the album and it's solid. It is full of self-loathing though and without some upstrokes to accompany it, that can get a person down.

If you have any rhythm at all, up strokes should be a piece of cake.

Mbox's aren't hard to use, but in truth there are better (and cheaper) alternatives. Go to a guitar shop (try to avoid Guitar Center if possible), tell someone there what you want to do, they'll get you set up.

They're more or less the Walmart of music shops. Don't get me wrong, you can find some great buys there, but try to support a local guitar shop if you can afford to. Plus, only a small amount of the employees I've ever talked to actually know what they're talking about, beyond the talking points that I'm sure a corporate office is giving them.

I have an MBox 2. It't not too hard to use. Mine came with Pro-Tools LE. There's a lot you can do with Pro-tools. I haven't figured out a lot. But I can get around and do basic recording with it. I recorded all my ukulele songs with an MBox.

Professional producer/musician here.

1: Mboxes aren't hard to operate and when used as it most minimal state, Pro Tools is very logical and works just like a tape machine.

2: You need a steady rhythm hand.

Please don't start a real band though, shitty bands plague ska like no other genre.

I'm not going to lie. I miss the horns. Mandala is a solid rock album. But the horn section just put them a step ahead of all the other progressive/rock/alternative/ska/reggae acts out there.

I get a base pay of 8.50.
And then on weddings and other parties of that nature I get a percentage amount for every head in the room. And then plus the bartender tips me out at the end of the night. So it could come to about 12-13+ an hour, but working that twice a week doesnt really cut it if you have bills and shit to pay.
Im going to a CC and living at home with only a phone bill and car insurence to pay for, so it works for me.

Also I had a nice talking too yesterday. Weeks ago I authorized some insurance(?) deal. It was a 4 week free trial so when it was over they got charged and I was found out for doing so.

I like the idea of exposing new artists to kids and all, but it's gonna be really annoying someday when I mention Gaslight to some bro or someone, and he's all "Oh yeah, that band from Guitar Hero, I fuckin' slayed on "Great Expectations".

As far as the games themselves, I think the concept is pretty cool.

I'm in Waco, Texas. I just had what's called a gut pack. It's bread(white or wheat), brisket, homemade italian sausage, beans, cheese, fritos, chili, pickles, and onion(I had it w/o the onion) and I think that's about it. It's all mixed together and it is just delicious. and I'm about to go to this diner/bar tonight and eat what's called Crazy Wings. It's like a ball of chicken with cheese and jalapeno mixed into it, deep fried, with bacon wrapped around it, dipped in ranch dressing.

Today is good.

So, Went to the Swingin Utter/Off With Their Heads/Dear Landlord @ Thee Parkside last night.....
OWTH killed it, and I mean that in a way that when I saw them play last night, with so much energy, and so much passion, it took me back to those old days of being a kid and being really giddy about the performance.... dancing and singing. I hadn't felt that way in years.... The best performance I've seen all year, honestly.
Dear Landlord did really good, but I only saw their last two songs.
Swingin Utters were great as always,and all the girls and band dorks got all wet over Jack making it really stuffy and humid about halfway through the set, so I had to step out for some air. Seen them a million times anyway.
There was alot of cute girls there too, but one kind of annoyed me with her Reinventing Axl Rose T-shirt-made-into-halter top.

I was a film major for a semester starting in spring. Just moving into the city weeks before classes started us transfers or what not got fucked and had to take what classes were still available. I took a history of film class (required anyways). I watched so many boring movies in that class. Up until we got to when sound was introduced i would always fall asleep. We were watching films from all over the world by decade. And then when the other students would discuss other films I'd sit in awe, never hearing of them before. I felt so fucking stupid.

Ok so look. As mentioned, I joined this film festival thing with a team. Well, I knew the lead female actress through out all of high school. Never talked to her. She's way pretty. But I kinda saw her as way too animated and annoying. Well 4 days after working together, we had sex. Two nights in a row. But she has a 29 year old bf(she's 19). Now take a barbell loaded with about 50% of the weight you would normally use on a heavy set of 6-8 reps.

That's right, only 50%.

I like to use a slightly narrower grip than shoulder width, but you can experiment.
