Mary Walsh developing punk themed sitcom

The CBC is reporting that Newfoundland-based comedian and Canadian TV personality Mary Walsh is creating a pilot for a new half-hour comedy titled Rise Up. The show will feature Walsh as aging punk rocker Siouxie Power, who moves her family from small-town Newfoundland to an upscale Toronto neighborhood after winning the lottery. The character of her former husband (and presumably bandmate) has the stage name of Spook Sparks.

Walsh, a veteran of the This Hour has 22 Minutes program, is the lead creator of the show along with Kevin White, who wrote for Corner Gas, and Sara Snow, who wrote for DeGrassi. The series is being produced by Christina Jennings of Shaftesbury Films. A pilot has been approved by Canwest but it's unknown if or when the show will air.

Lots of people on that show are really good looking.

Degrassi was filmed, and was about a high school in Toronto. Seeing as it is the 5th largest city, population wise, in North America, there is a lot of room for drama.

I never really cared for that show, but i will give them credit for casting actual teenagers rather than 30somethings trying to pass for 16 year olds.

This sounds terrible. Also, Corner Gas is the most uninteresting sitcom that I have ever seen. I am grateful to TBS for taking it off their late night schedule.

Plus, the write up says it was approved by CanWest, which would imply that this show will be on Global. They have a great track record...

CBC has their moments; Made in Canada and the Newsroom were great and they are partially involved with the Tudors.

This Hour has 22 minutes was great up until the original cast members began leaving. My favourite satirical news program up until The Daily Show began airing in Canada.

22 minutes isn't that bad. The current edition isn't on par with the original cast, but it has its moments; Mark Critch and that Gavin dude are fairly funny.

My curiosity has been piqued. There aren't many shows that have more than passing references to punk, or one-episode storylines.

For other Canadians (who watch the Family channel): there was an episode of Life With Derek that featured a "punk" character. It brought the lulz.
