In Memoriam: Willy DeVille of Mink DeVille (1950-2009)

Singer-songwriter and frontman/founder of punk act Mink DeVille, Willy DeVille has died at 58. DeVille passed from pancreatic cancer at New York's Cabrini Hospital.

The Oscar-nominated DeVille formed Mink DeVille as a showcase for his music, with the act going on to record six full-length albums (four with Willy) and combine elements of rock, punk, R&B, blues, soul, Cajun, Latin and cabaret. The band was also known for its association with the early punk acts at CBGB.

As a solo artist, DeVille recorded and released a number of albums, up until 2008's Pistola.

Our condolences go out to DeVille's family, friends and fans.

for "The Princess Bride." He wrote it with Mark Knopfler and I'm not sure what year the movie came out (late 80's)...beautiful ballad. And whoever posted about his age.Willy was born in 1950...all the dates concerning his birthday and years are wrong.

Well shit. I used to listen to Mink DeVille with my mom a lot when I was little. I haven't even thought or heard about them in years. Never would have even associated them with punk at all. I'm going to have to go find that tape.

Willy DeVille festive gathering NYC-Saturday-October 10-Tompkins Square Park. I'm fllying in from Toronto canada; my pals are coming from San Francisco and LA. We're hoping people will show and informally celebrate Wllly. He was unique. Started off with MinkDeVille who weren't punk but came from the same old cbgb's and lower east side as Ramones and Johnny Thunders. He dropped the Mink thing in the late 80's and was known by his own name. Unfortunately, North America didn't give him the acclaim he so justly deserved and became a very well known figure in Europe. He never stopped playing nor creating and he can't be slotted. That was probably the problem. But he certainly was a PUNK in attitude...check out his vids on utube...check out the party in NYC!
