Poison The Well robbed in Detroit

Florida's Poison The Well is the latest act to suffer from gear theft. The band was robbed when only two days into their ongoing tour with Billy Talent. The group commented:

So this morning we woke up at our delightful Marriot Courtyard hotel (priceline, get into it) and walked outside to get in the van to head to Chicago for our second show of the tour. Only problem, it isn't there. Either someone is pulling some Merlin shit on us and just waiting for the perfect moment to unveil it and calm our shot nerves, or a talented scumbag stole our van and trailer with literally everything we own inside. Needless to say, we're crushed. Our most beloved instruments are gone, and trust me, we're gear nerds.

After a great deal of scrambling and deliberation, we found a way to stay on tour, after a few days off to get some gear and a rental van together. Having something like this happen is the worst thing that can happen to any band short of someone dying, and we're incredibly stoked to finish this tour with Billy Talent and play every night doing what we love...

A benefit shirt is on sale to raise some funds for the group. The band is currently in support of their latest record The Tropic Rot.

It sucks when this shit happens.
I don't even like this band, but I mean what the fuck..... I don't know how many times I've said over and over... have someone or some people sleep in the van.
Not just that, but the hotel should have some sort of security guard on the parking lot or cameras.

Then again, IT IS Detroit, so like, how many times does this fucking happen there.

UPDATE: Authorities have obtained a surveillance video of the hotel parking lot that shows two suspects breaking into the van. Positive ID's have yet to be made and are increasingly difficult to obtain, according to local authorities, because, "the two men are wearing excessively baggy clothing and face paint...seemingly like some sort of clown". All major retailers of Faygo sodas, hatchets and large black dildos are being screened for information.

Normally I only do drive by comments but I feel I need to explain myself a little better for the denser among you. I have been a musician off and on for twenty two years.
The first thing you (should) learn when playing gigs is never take your eyes off the equipment until it's all inside. Cars are insured (hopefully fully insured) and can be replaced. This is even easier if your vehicle is rented. It's inconvenient, but doable.
What can't be replaced is the time and effort it took to find and buy or equipment, the work put into making merch, and that 1974 Gibson Les Paul you found cheap back in 91.Depending on the insurance you have, you may be able to be compensated for it, and maybe even replace some of it, but your tour is essentially over. The small inconvenience of keeping an eye on your shit is a small price to pay for the larger inconvenience of having the rug pulled out from under you.

PS. The car in my driveway is fully insured. Please steal it. It has nearly 100k niles on it now and I don't really use it very frequently. Also I don't store my instruments in it. That would be dumb.

The act of driving itself is way more dangerous than guarding your van.

Just think it through. You're in a cargo van, in a hotel parking lot. You are awoken by the shitload of noise created by someone trying to pop the locks or smash a front window. You grab your phone and blunt object of choice (of course dropping that shit if you see a gun), shouting at the bastards as you call your nearby bandmates for reinforcements. There is a huge chance they'll just take off immediately for fear of cops, especially if you're in a really public place like a lot; if they don't, your buddies will chase them off.

And even in a less-ideal scenario, even your archetypal meth-crazed psycho is not at all likely to kill a lone guy over a burglary -- you have to be more than crazy to risk a murder charge tacked onto armed robbery. The vast majority of people killed during robberies did something stupid to piss off the guy with the gun. Yeah, there are plenty of lunatics out there who'll kill you just so they can't be identified, but there are way more likely dangers to consider than some impossible gunfight inside a van in a Marriot lot.

In short, there are better options like insurance (though I've heard it's getting harder for musicians to get nowadays), hardware tricks and just being smart, but there's nothing wrong with sleeping in the van. Cowards!

Sleeping in the van is not always a great idea. A very close friend of mine's band was in Detroit and a member was sleeping in the van. He woke up to a group of guys beating on the window. They pulled him out of the van, kicked the living shit out of him, and stole the van anyway.

Clarion/MusicPro - The two most commonly used (and the only affordable) insurance companies will be happy to insure your gear against fire or theft, but good luck trying to get them to pay a claim against your gear getting stolen out of your van in Detroit. They will only pay if you gear is stolen OUT OF YOUR HOME.

This is not as simple a problem to remedy as you guys think.
