SideOneDummy Records has some photos of an elaborate new Gaslight Anthem-themed mural painted on the side of a new store in the Floyd's Barbershop chain in Venice Beach, CA.

I love these guys, but really?

Also saw these guys in Philly about a month ago--fans suck. A bunch of high school emo kids going for date night to makeout with their girlfriends during all of it.

Not at all the same show I saw two years ago in Philly when they outperformed and half the crowd left after Gaslight Anthem played at the First Unitarian during The Loved Ones CD Release party.

Hey guis...I have opinions!

Listen, I like the Gaslight Anthem a lot. I like everything they've put out (some more than others), but this is exactly the kind of fanboy stuff that causes the unnecessary backlash. I don't think it loses fans for the bands, but people who would otherwise be apathetic towards the band get frustrated with the ridiculous worship of the band (a fact that I'm sure is only aggravated by the fact that it's reported as "news"). If I paint a Jawbox tribute on my kitchen floor with ketchup and salad dressing, can we get that covered too?

it doesn't get much more contrived that writing all your songs about 1950s nostalgia. This band is on par with black metal bands that sing about corpses and satanic rituals.

seriously just sing about what you know. there's no way you can be nostalgic about a period that you were born 20 years after it ended. atleast there is a chance that black metal bands know something about corpses and satanic rituals. i know atleast a lot of prog and metal bands were into the d&d type adventures they sang about, though these days it all just seems like bands do it to be ironic.

if anything they sing about the 50s like wishing they could've been there, not really pretending they were. there are tons of nostalgic rockabilly bands, but The Gaslight Anthem definitely aren't one of them.

i think the rockabilly bands thing is just as stupid, but atleast they have a 50s based sound and don't drop such blatant references to the decade. i think the 50s could have been amazing. a lot of amazing music across a lot of genres went on then. i may draw influence from them or even steal something here or there, but i'm not going to be singing about white lincolns and bullshit like that and add this deep emotion to it. just like the boss he overdramatizes things.

i will never be able to appreciate the boss on any level. i bought Nebraska because a million people who's music i enjoy kept saying how great it was, and i'll say it's alright, maybe even a very hesitant good, but by no means great or life changing. about a month back i took a trip informally dubbed "new jersey appreciation weekend". we started in asbury park, we listened to the boss on new jersey radio, we visited e street. i still don't get it. his songs don't really have hooks he just compensates for that with excessive length and adding more and more instruments.
