At the Denver, CO stop of their ongoing tour with AFI, Green Day debuted a new song, "Cigarettes and Valentines." The song is the title track from the band's planned follow up to Warning which was scrapped when the master tapes were stolen. The band returned to the studio and instead recorded what would become American Idiot. The band noted they were recording a new live album, leading to speculation that some of the "lost" songs from the album would appear on the live album.
The band previous released a live album, Bullet in a Bible, in 2005. Green Day (55 comments)

Not ashamed to admit I'm still a Green Day fan, but man... Why are they doing such a lousy rendition of "Walking Contradiction"?

This is the first time I've been interested in a Green Day story in ages. I hope one of these days they drop the story about the "stolen" tapes and just release the songs. 2+ Replies

Just release the alleged record. That song sounds straight off Insomniac. Better than that last abortion.

I never bought into the whole "lost record" bit that went along with American Idiot. Even if tapes were lost, it isn't like they couldn't just re-record them. There's no shame in saying that your record sucked so you scrapped it and started over. Plenty of bands do it. 4+ Replies

I'm glad they went to Comfort Dental Ampitheatre, a venue with possibly the worst acoustics ever, to record a live album. 5+ Replies

I was there. They played this song twice in a row for no apparent reason. It was awesome. 1+ Reply

If you stole master tapes from Green Day, why wouldn't you bootleg them. Why else would you steal them? I call bullshit. And this song is no "Urban Legendary"? 1+ Reply

Bullet in a Bible was such a terrible, masturbatory excuse for a live-album. And also the last Green Day record I'll probably ever buy. Maybe this will be better. Who knows?

this sounds a lot like brat off of insomniac. also, the main riff reminds me of nervous breakdown 2+ Replies

"The Lost Record" must be an elaborate plot to write and play songs that sound like their old stuff, while they're contractually bound to write psuedo-classic rock songs for the radio.

this song is better than anything post-warning (maybe except for letterbomb, i have a soft spot for that song). 2+ Replies

I like the song, although i wouldn't quite claim it's better than all the songs on either AI, or 21st Century Breakdown. 3+ Replies

II always just assumed The Network was the "lost" Green Day album. They recorded an album that was a total departure, label says no, they release it under a different name and record a new one. 2+ Replies

I take no stance on weather the record was really stolen or not but I can definitely confirm that the story definitely pre-dates American Idiot. I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone from 2003 or 2004 all about how they had recently recorded a record but lost all the master tapes and had to start over.
