I just think it's hilarious for people to say that they LOVE albums like Punk In Drublic but think Coaster was 'a piece of shit' or 'sucks'.

It's the same band with the same formula. If you liked them once there is no reason to hate them now.

I think a lot of people are more fed up with the image than the band. Mike has continually and frequently gone out of his way to express how little he (or the band) care about writing songs, touring, practicing or just playing well in general. He expresses more passion about playing golf and doing drugs than he does about anything music related. I think after years of relaying the same message, people just start to believe it, even if the music doesn't reflect the story he's selling.

Personally, I think they've put out as much good as bad in the last 10 years but it's hard to even admit that when the guy making the material is basically saying he doesn't give a shit about it.

I don't talk about my job constantly, but when someone asks me about my job or when I am talking about my job, I usually don't go out of my way to express how little I care about it. If you pay attention, you'd notice I'm not saying the band is bad at all. I'm saying there has been a continual effort over the last 10 years on their part to make it seem like they don't care or enjoy music. So I can see why people might not want to support that, even if the music itself hasn't suffered.

I can understand that. It's a valid point and I agree, but only to a certain point. I guess, for me, I really don't care if bands are mean or apathetic. This may sound weird, but I feel like being nice is held as too high a priority for punk bands today. Everyone on boards will bitch about how this guy or that guy was a dick when they met someone in a band. Just because you're in a band, doesn't mean you have to be nice. I'm not saying be a dick per-say, but a sunny disposition and a natural excitement to talk to all the fans isn't a prerequisite for me. I don't think there's any malice either. They're old dudes and way past the point of pandering to a new generation of teenagers. At least NOFX is entertaining. Most bands members have little personality and aren't particularly verbose when inquired upon their music and/or other broad subjects.

Is it? Hm. I guess I was unaware and assumed that people were saying negative things just because it's cool to hate on new shit. Obviously.

Though I will admit that my expectations of a NOFX live show have lowered within recent years. I don't harbor any animosity toward NOFX for their actions. I think it's all pretty funny, actually. I personally enjoy the effort made to trick and agitate fans. It's not too common these days.

Though I do wonder how much of what they do is all talk. The Backstage Passport offered a lot of insight to what they're like when they're not being interviewed by some magazine dweeb. I mean, at this point, it's a legitimate question to ask if they really just go in the studio and shit out twelve songs without a lot of consideration. I hope not.

Eh, it's the internet. Don't worry about it.
People may complain (or rave) about the band for various reasons. It's totally possible that kids may just hate new stuff, just because it's new, or maybe they legitimately don't like it. I just know my experience with people (and even internally) has dealt a lot more with the apparent apathy and straight dislike of music than with the actual output.

Both valid points, but I think I agree with Dante - you don't have to be nice/mean/anything you don't want to be, but if you're constantly going OUT OF YOUR WAY to be an asshole, then that's a little different. For me, the music might be good or bad, but I'm tired of the shitheadedness. And that's now a word.

Agreed. I still like the music, but I paid 9 dollars two summers ago to see them at Red Rocks and felt like it wasn't worth it. 9 bucks.

I can only listen to them shit-talk their fanbase for so long before I realize "Hey, even if this is an act/joke, I don't fucking care anymore. Go fuck yourself."

that is bullshit. Fat Mike just wants so set an example for all the new punk bands that punk rock isn't about playing tight and technical. it is about being wasted and having fun.

also, i don't think he has ever said how little he cares about writing songs, he is one of the best songwriters of all time.

Agreed, besides Wolves being hit or miss - I've liked everything they've done in the past ten years.

As far as song writing goes, i'll take the post 2000 stuff, over the pre 2000 era any day.

Hell, I prefer their more recent stuff. They've got some great tunes from the 80's and 90's, but Pump Up The Valium and The Decline mark the point where they started to really become an interesting band in my eyes.
