The Suicide Machines

Following their recent reunion performance at The Fest in Gainesville, Florida, the The Suicide Machines look like they're extending their reunion, at least for a few shows. Tickets are now being sold for at least two upcoming performances, one in Toronto at the Mod Club on December 30th and one in Toledo, Ohio on January 15th. The Toledo show will also feature Sick Of It All, Outbreak, Alpha & Omega and Unsinkable Molly Brown. There's no word yet on how much further activity can be expected from the Detroit-based ska-punk act.

I saw these guys twice after their last recording and it was amazing. Jay is a sick front man.
Also, "War Profiteering.." was a fantastic album. Maybe my favorite behind DBD.

So which members of a band have kto be included in order to use the name? Dead kennedys have been getting shit for years even with the complete original lineup because they have a different singer, same with jerry only's misfits. If jason patched shit up with dan and they got some guy from the band sponge and a dude from kid rock's band to play with them would you take issue with calling themselves the suicide machines?

You realize I don't care about LTJ, right? Wasn't pretending to know, or to give a fuck. And if they're "one of the bigger bands," that's a sad testament to that genre. Yeah, a couple of the dudes sing, big fucking deal. It really doesn't change my point: "would you object if the singer (or one of the singers) kept the band going under the same name." You do understand that, right? I could have said, MXPX or AgainstMe or the fucking Monkees. It's REALLY simple to grasp.

considering RICH and RYAN have been in the band for MORE ALBUMS than Derek or Royce that would make them MEMBERS OF THE BAND, not "other guys". plus like the link below, Jay has openly said he would welcome Dan back, Dan is just a wuss hiding in Japan (and considering all the other members originally left the band because of him and his antics, why not get a mutual friend (Justin) of 3/4 of the band, to play?) sorry but i just don't see the logic here

Jason and Dan were in the band from inception to break-up, so I would consider them to be the most essential members of the band.

I'm not disagreeing that its not the same, and, for the record I liked a few graves-era misfits songs, but I don't see the big deal with jason doing this even without dan. Yeah he was a foubding member, but a lot of bands do that kind of thing.

If Jason can take three other guys and make them the Suicide Machines, can we do this with other bands? Can Jesse Michaels take three guys and call them Operation Ivy? Can Morrissey get three dudes together and call them The Smiths?

I just think its bullshit and its dragging the name of an old band through the mud. I bring this up every time Dave Wakeling's people send a press release over here announcing an English Beat tour when in fact he's the only original member of the band. He used to call his band "Bang!" but eventually figured out there was much more money to be made calling it the English Beat instead. Jason could just as easily call his band something else, and even bill it as "playing Suicide Machines songs!" and I think that would be a-ok. I seem to remember him coming on this board after the Fest announcement saying that playing as The Suicide Machines was a one-time, Fest-only thing that was just for fun. Maybe its about something more than that now and it stinks.

Out of curiosity, do you take issue with this because Dan was the primary songwriter? What about a band like The Dillinger Escape Plan, where the primary songwriter is the only original member of the band, and the rest of the band has been replaced at least two times? Or AFI, where the primary songwriter left yet the band continued on and managed to create a new identity where "If Davey/Adam/Hunter/Jade left they should just discontinue the band"?

I think it depends on who the main songwriter is above everything else. Less Than Jake wouldn't be Less Than Jake without the drummer, even if it kept both singers.

On the other hand, the line-up of The Queers has changed many times in their history of over 20 years, but the name has never changed since Joe Queer has always been the lead singer and written all the words.

The Mr. T Experience changed members so many times that they were jokingly referred to as "The MTX Starship", but the name doesn't change as long Dr. Frank writes all the lyrics.

Fair point, but I think the drummer for LTJ only writes the lyrics. Roger writes the guitars and Chris just comes up with the melodies. Ok, good questions and I like this debate:

1. I take less of an issue with Dan being a primary songwriter and more of an issue that the band broke up. I don't know what really happened but it seems that Jason and Dan decided that the band shouldn't be together anymore, and Jay (unilaterally) decided after the fact that it should. That's not right. Concerning DEL or AFI, neither of those bands broke up. That's a key point.

2. Songwriters leaving is a fuzzy grey area and I think that it depends of where you stand. I don't know what the story with DEL, other than they've had a rotating cast of singers, but I know with AFI that Davey had as much to with the songwriting as Mark or Geoff, so I don't think that point holds. There's other bands like TSOL where there was a complete membership turnover, but at least they can claim continuity. Going back to point 1, I think continuity is key.

1. From the reports that I've read, turmoil with Dan caused Rich and Ryan (bassist and drummer, respectively) to leave in the middle of a tour, which resulted in at least Danny Lore from Against All Authority to fill in on bass so that they could finish the tour (which, honestly, would be really awesome to see (I love AAA)). I don't know if it was necessarily Jason and Dan saying, "Okay, this band is done" as much as it was the rest of the band saying they could no longer tolerate playing with Dan and Jason being caught in the middle. I guess it could be likened to Derrick Plourde with Lagwagon and Jim Cherry with Strung Out. Both bands very nearly did break up over conflict with just one member in the band (and, at least in Jim Cherry's case, he was a songwriter), yet continued on and continued releasing strong material.

2. I don't mean to sound snide, but I think Davey has said before that he couldn't play an instrument to save his life, but he is the one obviously writing the lyrics and creating the vocal melodies, at least partially with Jade.

2.1 I really like the idea of continuity playing a part, but I can't help but think of Catch22, where the songwriter/lyricist/singer left (or was kicked out...whatever) along with another member or two, yet Catch22 continued on and even went through another singer before settling with two vocalists, those being the two horn players that never wanted the band to split up anyway. I had to force myself to think of Catch22 as two different versions of the same band, because I enjoyed "Keasbey Nights" and "Alone In A Crowd."

3. One part of me does not like the idea of The Suicide Machines playing without Dan (or Derek or Royce, both of whom I happen to favor over the current drummer and bassist). The other part of me (at least after reading statements by Jay and Dan) thinks that it sucks that the rest of the band has extended an olive branch towards Dan and he doesn't appear to want to patch things up and the fans have to suffer. Since Dan is in Japan (I think) would it change your opinion if he gave the rest of the band his blessing to continue playing a few shows here and there without him?

seems to be some confusion here... it's not Jay Navarro plus three ringers. Rich (bassist) and Ryan (drummer) were both members of the Machines for 5+ years before they broke up. The only "other guy" is Justin, the guitar player - a friend of the band and member of Hellmouth on drums. Dan is not involved because A) he lives in Japan and B) he's the reason the band stopped existing in the first place.

I mean, everybody's welcome to their opinion, and if you want to consider this "not" the Suicide Machines, don't go see them. Having watched them play three times since they started playing shows again I'm confident saying that you'll be missing out.
