The Soviettes, Chinese Telephones, Teenage Bottlerocket drop from Weasel Fest

More fallout from the Ben Weasel SXSW debacle, as The Soviettes, Chinese Telephones and Teenage Bottlerocket have canceled their scheduled appearances at the impending Weasel Fest headlined by Screeching Weasel on May 27-29 at Reggie's in Chicago, IL. You can see The Soviettes' statement on their MySpace page and Chinese Telephones' statement on their website. Teenage Bottlerocket announced their decision via twitter.

Weasel issued an apology for his actions at SXSW yesterday.

People on Facebook seemed pretty pissed at Teenage Bottlerocket, telling them they had already bought their tickets just to see TBR. People were also saying that these bands aren't thinking of their fans. Thoughts?

I would NEVER claim my friends aren't stupid.

However, I love Chicago (especially in the spring), and I don't need much of an excuse to visit. If I'd had the spare cash at the time, seeing bands who don't tour like the Soviettes and Chinese Telephones would've been a decent enough reason to take a vacation during the only time of year that particular city is tolerable outdoors. A handful of folks I know apparently feel the same.

I LOVE Slapstick... I've seen them a few times back at Fireside and Metro, and my friend got tickets for their show in June. He asked me if I wanted one of the tickets, and I just thought "oh, man... what a HUGE fucking waste of money that would be! Chicago to SF to see bands play."

I don't know... it's just not my thing, I guess.
I drove down to Gainesville for The Fest 7, and even though I had a fucking blast, I would never do it again. You can see those bands anywhere/anytime, and even if they are one-time reunions at some, then, tough titties. Listen to their albums at home.

Do you just not like to travel, or would your opinion change if the expenses were reasonably minimal?

Music means a lot to me; it's my primary emotional outlet and something I've practically devoted my whole life to. I'd gladly travel insane distances if it meant I'd get to experience it in the best way and best environment possible. I was lucky enough to be born into a family in the airline industry, and I've fully exploited my free-or-reasonably-priced flights to attend one-off shows or festivals all over the US (and in CAN and AUS, but on my own $$$). It's actually more of a hassle and emotional drain than if I just spent the money to travel there normally, but I've never regretted a single excursion. I don't like being tethered to just one spot on the globe and each trip is an exotic adventure packed with interesting people and sights; something far more memorable and meaningful than just driving down the block to my local rock club.

We had NO idea what we were attaching our names to with this whole Weasel Weekend thing. Sure, it's a knee-jerk reaction to an over-dramatized event- no question about that. And, yes... a lot of people who already invested time and money into attending this fest are going to be disappointed, but there's a LOT of street cred to be gained from fostering the illusion of moral integrity. If I had tickets only for one of the bands that dropped off, I still wouldn't be too upset. The cancellation is for a good reason.

However, anyone wanting a refund should DEFINITELY be able to get one from whoever is organizing that "fest". Even Screeching Weasel fans that don't want to go anymore.

BUT... I have a feeling the whole weekend is gonna get canceled...

Chinese Telephones are actually still going to play Chicago that weekend (the 28th to be specific). Assuming you are 21+, they are playing at the empty bottle with the Marked Men, This is My Fist!, The Arrivals, and Toys that Kill. If not, really sorry to tease. I know how that feels, being I'm 19 and more bummed about not going to this show, rather than weaselfest.

I dunno, I think this is gonna haunt Ben Weasel for a long time. If people don't want to be associated with him, that's their right, though it does suck for the people who want to see these bands. But hey, it's Chicago, they will most certainly get a chance to see all those bands another time.

I can't really speak for everyone, but before this I kind of regarded Ben Weasel as an antagonist, a guy who was a dick verbally, but not really a 'tough guy' who would go throwing punches, especially not at women. He tried to rile people up with his words, and if he ever got in a fight, it was because he talked enough shit to provoke it, or at least this was the perception I had of him.

But now, it's clear that he himself is a violent person, and that changes a lot of how I view him. Maybe I was ignorant all along of who he really was, but I am surprised he would react like such a meat head. It's a lot harder to back a guy like that than just a punk guy who talks a lot of shit.

He is the band playing the show. He could have had the girl tossed. Hell, security should have done it for him beforehand! But instead, he threw a haymaker. By no means was it cool for either side to do what they did, but there are ways of handling these things without trying to knock a girl's teeth our of her skull.

I can understand why these bands would drop off the show, but it's definately not fair to the fans or the other members of Screeching Weasel for that matter. Just kind of sucks for everyone involved that one mans actions had to put everybody in such a shitty position.

It is totally fair to the other members of Screeching Weasel, it is kind of their fault for being in a band with Ben Weasel. They shouldn't be blamed for what Ben did, but they have the choice to no longer be associated with him or not now that he punched two women at SXSW. If they choose to continue being in a band with Ben Weasel, they have to accept that he is disliked by many and they are not going to play a show with people that hate Ben Weasel. They can play shows with these bands in their other bands.

i honestly think it will eventually blow over. i know a guy who had a woman spit in his face and he decked her, ordinarily a bad deal but she was 8 months pregnant when it happened making it much, much worse. i thought the fall out was going to be insane but within a month all seemed forgotten by almost everyone involved besides her husband. long story short, year later he has a stroke at 37 (just desserts) but when it came time to have a benefit show for him (he is/ was a major player in detroit's hip hop scene) noone mentioned him punching her and everyone played it as nothing had happened. if i brought it up to anyone it was pointed out that she is a stupid bitch and brought it on herself really weirded me out

I think Ben Weasel is a big dick, but it doesn't really make sense for these bands to cancel. It's not like he was ever a nice guy or someone who's actions you could really back. And for everyone saying "these bands will play in Chicago again soon", that really doesn't help anyone who is traveling for this which I think is probably most of the audience. The shows sold out super fast and the last time SW played in the same place it didn't sell out for months.

The Fest isn't a festival specifically about Tom Gabel. I guarantee a lot less people would have dropped out of playing a festival that Screeching Weasel was playing than dropped out of playing a festival that is specifically about Screeching Weasel. Also, Tom Gabel didn't make derogatory to the guy to cause the guy to talk shit to cause Gabel to slam his head into the table. Gabel also has a reputation as a pretty nice guy, so it comes off as a bit more of a mistake than with Weasel where it comes off as another shitty thing he has done, but this one being over the top since it got violent. With all that same, I am not really defending Tom Gabel.

Yeah, but that's different. Fletcher wasn't like "I'm gonna go beat the shit out of those emo assholes, they threw ice at me." He got drunk, tried to get on the Rev Peyton's bus, and instead of leaving when asked to, made himself a sandwich and got in a drunken fight. I dunno, it just seems different. He didn't preface his violent outburst with a bunch of misogynistic comments and at the end of the day, there were no hard feelings between the bands. This, on the other hand, seems much more malicious. The Pennywise story seemed more like something you could laugh about that.

Maybe I'm not being clear. The Pennywise/Alesana incident occurred with almost no repercussions and no animosity between the bands afterwards, so no one really took it seriously. You didn't hear anyone go "Fuck Pennywise/Alesana, I'm not listening to them anymore!" because of it. With this incident, Ben's clearly pissed a ton of people off and the whole situation just seems way more serious. You just can't compare the two situations, it's apples and oranges.

And, the more times I watch the video, the more I'm seeing something totally different than what you guys are describing: I can clearly see the club owner shoving Ben when she leaps onto the stage (you can see him stumble forward), then she grabs his left shoulder with both hands at the time he's turning around to swing at her. Her hand doesn't make contact with his face. Ben is reacting to the shove.

For what it's worth, the more times I watch the video, the less confident I am in my assessment of it.

Based on his body language, I'm 99% certain that Ben didn't turn around with the intention of swinging at the club owner.

He turned around to see who/what it was... at that very instant, her right hand is coming down on his shoulder.

I think that (whatever it was) is what he was reacting to.

After watching this for 27th time, I think you're right- she DEFINITELY missed his face... however, the punch, slap, high-five gone horribly wrong looks very, very malicious to me. In heat of the moment, I'll bet it looked malicious to him too.

I can tell you the exact show. It was at Pops in St.Louis back in the early 00s (I want to say with Rancid). NOFX was playing a horrible show and the crowd turned on them. I was heckling the shit out of Fat Mike and he threw a beer bottle in my general direction. It hit the girl next to me. Thank god it didn't break. I will and always be a fan of Ben Weasel and both of his bands! If I was in that position, I would have punched that fucking smelly skank also for throwing shit at me for an entire set. If you can't stand somebody voicing their opinion then don't go to a Punk Rock show! Throwing ice or anything when a band is playing is fucking asinine! This is one of the main reasons that I can barely stand to go to a Punk show anymore due to all of the trashy uneducated assholes!

I really don't understand what the big deal is. Ben Weasel always has, always will, and always claimed to be an asshole. Why is everyone so shocked when he pulls an asshole move? I'm a girl and often times i mouth off to asshole guys who think they're above everyone else, and i do this solely because i am a girl... banking on the fact that no guy will hit me because of that. Someone needed to shut that bitch up.

These bands dropping out of Weasel Fest could use their influence and have Ben Weasel donate some of the profits to an organization(s) that combat domestic violence, bullying, hate crime, etc. What happened is fucked up but it can be channeled towards something positive.

The Soviettes, Chinese Telephones, Teenage Bottlerocket, Chixdiggit, don't be lame, look at the bigger picture and do something more than just pull out of the show in order to distance yourselves from the problem, because that is not enough!
