Tours: Alkaline Trio / Smoking Popes

Just prior to the release of their new(ish) album, Damnesia, Alkaline Trio will be hitting the road for a tour with Smoking Popes. So far just two weeks of West Coast dates have been announced (and gone on sale) but it would be reasonable to expect more shows as the Trio celebrate their 15th anniversary.

Oh God, so much this. They used to play my town all the time, but it was at a bar. We used to hang outside with Socko signs. They tried sneaking me in once. They got caught.

They put on one of the best shows of all time. With Trout, they were unstoppable.

I guess they had a reunion show in Indy a couple years back and I heard nothing about it. I kick myself every time I think about it.

Even though the line-up for Asian Man Fest is absolutely amazing and I'll be seeing bands I never thought I'd ever see or see again, part of me is still bitterly, sourly disappointed that Johnny Socko wasn't included. Seeing them would blow my socks off.

I am totally with you. I kept holding out hope that Socko would be one of the bands. I didn't really believe it would happen. It's not like they really ever had a following outside the midwest. They are the best thing that ever came out of living in Indiana. I used to get to see them all the time (although, again, they usually played bars I was too young to get into) and they are still one of the few bands I dream about seeing again. I am really excited about the Asian Man fest, but I'm afraid my dreams of Socko playing the picnic are just that...a dream. Well Skibz777, we should reminisce about Socko in San Fran next month. Where are you coming from? I'm guessing LA because you seemed to have a lot of old school ska stories. Am I correct?

the last time trio played 'round these parts, they were awful. but i'd watch them again...just to be sure.

Worst part is, Popes will probably be opening for Trio, which is a goddamn shame.

You know it isn't a "probably" its certain, they are a far more popular band. That's a shame. When they opened for Jawbreaker, nobody knew any of the songs either.

The Dear You tour? That was one of the best shows I've ever been to. And I got see Jawbreaker open for Nirvana...

Hot damn, that's a name I haven't heard for years. They were on a whole bunch of comps I owned in high school. They opened for The Aquabats a few years ago and literally everybody in the audience just stood silently still their entire set. Kind of awkward.

It was a benefit show for Tony Carbone of Bikeride. Supernova played, too. Take out the 'Bats and you had a decent bar show from '94.

I keep seeing the guy from Fluf at numerous LA shows. It's creepy.

Whoa...not even counting the semi-private Asian Man Fest show, some of these are relatively small venues, like 600-800 capacity. Am I wrong, or were Alkaline Trio much bigger than that?

They played a 200 capacity place in my hometown last summer. Obviously, it sold out. Yes, they are bigger than that. They're also awesome.

they really are, but small venues are always a better time. when i saw bad religion in kitchener, the place was packed, but couldn;t have been more then 600 people there. fantastic show.

I guess it's cool that they do that, though personally I'd rather deal with a larger venue than a sold-out, overpacked club.

it's a tough balance to strike, true. you just have to hope for a non-assholeish crowd at the smaller ones. can't picture this one being that bad. the dropkicks are playing halifax in july, and that crowd is probably gonna be terrible.

When you release those East Coast dates there better be one near Kentucky, damn you, because I am going to buy a ticket to this. It would be preferable if I could actually attend.

Yeah, I bought a ticket for Face To Face later this month, I found out later that I am going to be out of town that day, but hey we get two shows a year in Jacksonville, one is always Less Than Jake I figure I'll keep the ticket just like I did when F2F canceled due to hurricane charley five years ago in Orlando.

Man, I have family in Jacksonville that I visit at least twice a year. Every time I think, "Well, Jacksonville is a bigger metro area than here, better check to see if there are any shows I can go to. Oh, Less Than Jake played there last February and that's it? Good show then."

Yeah, I moved here from Orlando to go to graduate school, I planned on moving home and ended up in a relationship so I just stayed, in Orlando we had at least two shows a month.

Still don't get the appeal of either of these bands. I like a bunch of the other "org" bands...what is it about Alkaline Trio??? His vocals just some moody and brooding. Musically, the don't knock my socks off, but they don't bore me.

Mine too. Either that or I Lied My Face Off. Good Mourning would be my 2nd least favorite behind Agony and Irony. That album is just horrendous. Lordy, other than "Calling All Skeletons" I try and forget that disc ever happened.

While I enjoy Goddamnit, From Here to Infirmary is definitely my favorite. It's such a sold album. Good Mourning probably beats out Goddamnit, too, if I'm going to be honest with myself.

choosing a favorite alk3 album is impossible for me. trouble breathing and 97 are my favorite songs but goddamnit, micf, the s/t and fhti are so fucking solid. i can't choose. i fucking love this band and i will till the day i die. homeboy might not understand the appeal, but i don't understand the hate. all bands, save maybe slayer, change over their career. don't hate them for it.

'My Little Needle' and 'Trouble Breathing' are up there with their best. That album also has some of their worst. 'Cop', 'Enjoy Your Day'

i like cop, but compared to the rest of that cd it's at the bottom. trouble breathing will always be my favorite. every show i go to i'm always like "ok, good song, but the next one is gonna be trouble breathing. it's gotta be." but it never is.
