Videos: Superchunk: “Learned to Surf”

Pitchfork has unveiled a new video from Superchunk for "Learned to Surf." The track appears on the band's 2010 full-length Majesty Shredding.

Even though the song was released way before the LP, it is my favorite off of Majesty Shredding. I get a smile on my face every time it starts.

I think I prefer the "Leaves in the Gutter" version. Unusual?

I dunno, on the album version Wilbur really kills the lead guitar from the second verse onward. Excuse the pun, but it's pretty damn majestic. The Leaves version is the one I fell in love with first, though. It's so hard to choose.

What I like about the original is that it's cleaner and more laid-back, as opposed to the crunchier and louder version on 'Majesty Shredding'. It sounds a little awkward, almost as if they had written a late-90s Superchunk song, but then tried to make it sound more like an early Superchunk song, if that makes any sense.

I've said before that was my issue with 'Majesty Shredding': it's more like it was written to *sound like* a Superchunk album, as opposed to naturally being one. I can only assume that was a conscious decision after the amount of time Mac had spent with Portastatic, but there was such a strict adherence to Superchunk's characteristic sound and formula that the album totally lacked any surprises.

Still a kick-ass album, but I honestly don't think I can say it's better than any that came before it.

Best part is the ending. Live videos are alright, but these guys are so good at making hilarious ones so I was hoping for more of the same.
