Facetious Subheadline: Punknews commenters completely shocked and appalled at music/politics connection. "We didn't see this coming! There's no precedent for this!" says 13 year old mall-punk. Hastily written debate to follow.
From Fat Wreck Chords: "In the spirit of being responsible citizens and good ol' fashioned punk rock activism, we bring you http://www.punkvoter.com. As the November elections approach we all need to do our best to make sure the vile Republicans DO NOT gain control of the Senate! It's gonna be real close, and we can't give the village idiot George Jr. a blank check, so we all need to do our part to vote against the GOP. We got big plans for punkvoter.com: there's going to be news, guest columns written by some of your punk rock heroes, a voting resource highlighting key elections, and a place to download flyers and stickers so you can help spread the good word. Your teachers will love this shit! Oh yeah, and for all you playa-hatin' right-wing shitbirds out there who "don't wanna hear about our politics...", well we can direct you to some other label that puts out records about high school and girls. Ask Floyd, he has an extensive list. I dunno what kinda shit you listened to, but we grew up listening to the Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Stiff Little Fingers, Dead Kennedys, and The Clash to name a few. This music was conceived in, and reamins true to the ideals of social progress and political awareness, so deal with it. We punks gotta start doing something about these assholes that are making decisions on our behalf, and we're hoping that by working together, we can accomplish something truly positive. So join us! Go to the site, look around, and sign up!" Punk Voter (141 comments)

"Good political resources are hard to come by, and while this might not be the best or most credible source out there" are you kidding me.....this isnt a fair and balanced politcal website. using phrases like....Fuck You GW. this site makes me sick. its one thing not agreeing with GW...but dont bash him. instead give new ideas...but wait, thats all democrats can do is bash and provide no real solutions. 8+ Replies

The site has some cool stuff, I wish they mentioned that Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard is running for Congress here in VA. I do have to say that it was pretty lame to put a link to the NOFX webpage in the links section. -sickboi 1+ Reply

For anyone to say "we all need to do our best to make sure the vile Republicans DO NOT gain control of the Senate! " Is pretty closed minded.
But why can't punk politics be right wing?
You don't work, you don't eat. Seems pretty easy to understand to me. Accept responsibility for your decisions. Don't expect a government hand out when you screw your own life up.
You want to be an activist? Write to your congressman about YOUR VIEWS, don't accept something because some "anti-capitalist" said it, or because you read it in CD liner notes, or you saw it on a website. Don't call all people of one political party vile, that is an individual's view.
I'd rather be vile in one person's view than a judgemental asshole in everyone's. I'd rather be vile standing up for what I believe in, rather than being jerked around in my political views by whatever Anti-Flag, show rest of comment 12+ Replies

In Massachuetts the vote would, in most other years go to a democrat. But this year, the person we are trying to keep out is the democrat. This will go to show you that Just because Fat Mike says so doesnt mean it is scripture. Sure there is some people that will disagree with me in the upcoming election in MA but if your vote was going to be a smart one then you wouldnt pick Shannon O Brien, whose husband worked with Enron at the time of the stock market scandal, who has been a part of the complete disaster on beacon Hill, who is for bi-lingual education. it just pisses me off when someone is so close minded as to pretty much say, as long as those damn repulbicans dont get voted in I dont care who does. Which is pretty much what I get out of this article. Sometimes you need to be conservative. Sometimes you cant be looking to handout goverment funds to e show rest of comment 5+ Replies

am I tired of having old men run my country? Help us vote democratic? Hmmm, like Al Gore is this hip young go getter out to undo the wrongs that Bush made. There both pretty fucked if you ask me. Getting a one sided opinion from Fat Mike about how great democrats are is just as bad as beleving everything Bush himself self says. Make up your own fucking mind. Oh, and the comment on the fat site about other labels and bands who write girl songs? Hmmm, lets see, half the fat lineup is third rate cali punk, or shitty overproduced pop punk. Don't bash other labels or people for writing girl songs, especially if you have bands on your label who do. The only bands left that are worth something on Fat are d4, the larry arms, and propagahndi anyway, i wish those three would just jump off it. 3+ Replies

I agree that Bush is a retard, but how can you possibly say that democrats are any better? Anyone who would choose either of these parties is obviously not the most intelligent person. Republicans and Democrats both just want your money and loads of power. You'd have to be an idiot to buy the shit they're selling. Fuck em. 2+ Replies

as a general rule, i am more likely to be critical of republicans for the simple fact that they dont represent my ideas very well and haven't in the past. in the grand political spectrum, democrats are basically the same thing as repubs, but they play the heart card a little more. im really weary of the war-hawk republicans. they're the ones to watch and oust. it should be noted that highest elected official opposing our draconian drug war is a republican, which took me by suprise as much as anyone.

to all the comments about bush being a war machine. you guys are nuts...and so is fat mike with his "democratic" view...the majority of democrats (even Daschle) voted to give bush military power in iraq. so how does this represent fat mike/antflag views about no war....let me tell you, IT DOESNT. 2+ Replies

overall a decent site i guess. the funny thing is where they have "real" quotes from Bush, most or all of those have also been attributed to Al Gore. maybe they are really Bush quotes, I have no idea. 2+ Replies

No matter Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, what have you, I’d say Fat Mike has already succeeded with Punkvoter, he got all you thinking and discussing Politics on a punk rock news page.

Funny, Fat Mike preaches to the 15 year olds that go to his shows and can't vote, and the 18 year olds that are already tons more sophisticated to learn their ideologies from some crusty, don't know shit punk band... I say the FEC (Federal Election Commission) should go after Fat Mike and regulate "punkvoter.com" as a national Democrat political entity so he would be forced to comply with campaign contribution spending limits... Non-partisan my ass... 2+ Replies

Epitaph at least had the balls to open up a forum for discussion and argument when they discussed the proposed War on Iraq... Fat Mike, you expect people to just fall in line with your views...why not have an open forum on your new website, dickface?! Why not see how many punkers actually disagree with your slogan-speak. Slogan-speak is a poor substitute for coordinated action and real solutions to the world's problems... 2+ Replies

What's funny is that Mike has been putting out records since you got off the tit. Long before you got your first sweater to head out to a Dashboard show. Even before your two-tone Vans that you wore to the Skatalites show in 1998. This guy actually fuggin' does something more than isn't a sameless self promotion and every kid wants to point fuckin fingers. Hey dude, what's your favorite band doing with their spare time? You think Dashboard is going to take a risk and alienate fans by putting some political views out there? Thrice is from Orange County, southern I believe. Maybe they can crank out some Richard Nixon library, my Dad is a Republican, SUV drivin' propaganda based hits.
KirbyPuckett (October 22, 2002)
This would have been great to stop the Republicans from gaining control of the Senate if it was actually launched before the deadline to register for voting! Which was sometime in early October. Now most people, who weren't aware of said topics are going to have to wait till the next time around. - Scott http://www.local-felons.com/~uw/ (Ed Rendell for governor of PA)

First of all, I am NOT a conservative by any means, however.. Where the does fat mike get off telling people how to vote? It sickens me that he has decided to use Fat wreck's status to influence people's political opinions for a strictly left-wing agenda (or ANY agenda for that matter!). If MCA records decided to support the republic party to even a fraction of the level that fat mike has done for the democrats, you all would have thrown a fit! I've been buying records from fat wreck for over 6 years, and they will not see one more dime from me ever again. 7+ Replies

listen people if every person who claimed to be "punk" would actually come out to vote when they need too then we could out rank the two major policital parties. if fat mike wants to put his money where is mouth is he would either start another party or get in step with the green or independent party to aggressivly court the young people out there into getting involved and making sure that people do sign up to vote. get the top punk bands out there to spread the message and have booths set up at their shows to make sure everybody signs up..fuck mtv's rock the vote we gotta do this DIY style the punk way and I think that maybe fat mike isnt the right person to lead this party but maybe somebody like ian mackay or greg graffin. now thats a ticket I'd vote for! 2+ Replies

Finally, Fat Mike is doing something a little more helpful than crying about how much he hates George "Dubya" Bush.
lockdown59 (October 22, 2002)
I want to know, has Fat Mike ever agreed with a president? I have only been around the punk community during the Dubya administration, so I don't know his thoughts on Clinton, Reagan, Bush Sr., Carter, Ford, and so on. Has he always been a crybaby about it? Please tell me he hasn't. i am so sick of reading Mike's comments that are little more than "Bush is a douchebag." You could at least tell us why you think that. Is he a douchebag for moving troops towards Iraq? Is he a moron because he is has had corporations lobby for him? What about his obvious futile attempts to help get peace in Israel? Come on, mike. At least bands and such can back up their opinions. I have never heard you back it up. 3+ Replies
KirbyPuckett (October 22, 2002)
You people are really getting bent about this shit and it's downright funny as hell. The majority of those who are rather upset by Mike's actions here seem to be pointing at the fact that he's in a band and he's using his very popular status in the Punk rock community to influence voters.
What the hell is wrong w/ that?
Why are you making such a fuss over someone exrpressing their opinions? Oh wait, I forgot...Nearly 95% of the users on this website bash anyone based on opnions (Look for that huge rant I wrote awhile back).
...back on track. Who cares if the owner of Fat Wreck Chords decides to help setup a website inorder to help spread his political ideas? I run essentially a personal website, I post my own ideas, my rants, my feelings, and whatever types of miscellaneous information I want to put on there. Why? Because it's MINE.

I haven't gone to this site yet, but I'm about to. It sounds intriguing. Hopefully it will live up to the potential it has. Good political resources are hard to come by, and while this might not be the best or most credible source out there, I'm happy to see anything that might give a slightly different point of view than what the mainstream media throws in our face.
