MSNBC is reporting that a group of artists including
Devo,
Yo La Tengo,
Third Eye Blind, Toots and the Maytals, and more will be contributing songs to a compilation entitled
Occupy This Album. Proceeds from the album will, fittingly, benefit the Occupy Wall Street movement. Filmmaker Michael Moore will also reportedly sing on the record.
The money generated from sales of the album will be distributed to the movement through the non-profit Alliance for Global Justice, who plan to give half the money to the original New York-based branch of the movement, and the other half will be distributed to the remaining "offshoots" as they apply for funding for specific projects.
The album is planned to be released "sometime this winter."
If anybody's on DEVO's Facebook, it's been quite amusing to watch all the people completely oblivious to the band's political nature be outraged over their support for OWS. I myself may not align myself with their political ideology, but I don't understand how anyone could miss such a thing.
