Devo, Yo La Tengo, and more to contribute to Occupy Wall Street benefit album

MSNBC is reporting that a group of artists including Devo, Yo La Tengo, Third Eye Blind, Toots and the Maytals, and more will be contributing songs to a compilation entitled Occupy This Album. Proceeds from the album will, fittingly, benefit the Occupy Wall Street movement. Filmmaker Michael Moore will also reportedly sing on the record.

The money generated from sales of the album will be distributed to the movement through the non-profit Alliance for Global Justice, who plan to give half the money to the original New York-based branch of the movement, and the other half will be distributed to the remaining "offshoots" as they apply for funding for specific projects.

The album is planned to be released "sometime this winter."

If anybody's on DEVO's Facebook, it's been quite amusing to watch all the people completely oblivious to the band's political nature be outraged over their support for OWS. I myself may not align myself with their political ideology, but I don't understand how anyone could miss such a thing.

If anyone's interested, Jerry Casale commented on the band's contribution to the album:

"DEVO are not occupying anything except space on the planet. Any creature that lives in harmony with nature probably has more validity living here than most human beings since humans breed too much, consume too much and kill everything in sight. Maybe we should not give the Occupy people a song. Maybe we should do nothing. However, doing nothing is what got us to the point where the free market cannot sustain itself with it's current, unregulated, corrupt model. Hard work and innovation should always be rewarded to the max. That's what made this country great. Gaming the system and robbing people by irresponsible speculation in derivatives and debt swaps, sub-prime mortgages and questionable hedge fund bets is parasitic. It seems the Occupy movement is an open source, if often unfocused, mass response to a serious crisis and a great injustice created by selfish greed and quasi-legal gambits. The perpetrators were even so bold as to hold a gun to the taxpayers heads and demand bailouts for their own bad decisions. Is that the kind of America we want?"

I prefer to stylize it as DEVO, but then again, I used to type "The Mighty Mighty BossToneS" for a long time, so I can't be trusted with these things.

I love Devo and I think that is a very well worded and intelligent statement. Nothing about that sounds over the top or "crazy" in my opinion.

Haha yeah dude I've been watching that as well! It's been pretty entertaining... like you said, regardless of whether you agree or not, if you're a DEVO fan you shouldn't be surprised that they would be in support of this.
