Tours: Reel Big Fish / Orange (UK)

Ska-punks Reel Big Fish and Orange have posted a number of shows across the UK in January and February this year. The band also recently released an album of acoustic songs called Skacoustic via iTunes.

I'm wondering if this will be their last tour, after their US run. There's no way they could keep going now, can they? Really the only draw to their shows in the last couple years was the banter, and even that wasn't all that good...without that, where do they go? County fairs?

I'm not thegimper, I'm a normal person who's never had the need to see Reel Big Fish more than twice in my lifetime. I can't say whether or not their banter differs from show to show. Regardless, Klopfenstein was really the only tolerable member of the band. Without him, RBF is without soul.

It disheartens me that a band which isn't even centered around antics would have to recycle banter. For God's sake, I've seen The Aquabats God knows how many times and while I've seen them re-use costumes and props, they've never repeated jokes or banter.

While Orange are playing Reel Big Fish sneak into their rider and throw all the cans of coke about so that when they get off stage and go for some refreshment it explodes in their big dumb faces. Reel Big Fish call it Shaking Up Orange's Treat.

I can't imagine that they would even be slightly disappointed in that. They aren't my favorite local band but they are incredibly talanted musicians and play an interesting mix of ska, funk, and metal. Probably actually heavier on the funk than anything else.

But seriously, Reel Big Fish has got to quit. And I know some might be thinking "What's the big problem? How does this affect you or anyone else in the world?". It affects everything. When Reel Big Fish throws in the towel forever, maybe they'll have less fans. Maybe I'll never again have to hear another fucking local band play that terrible cover of "Take On Me". Maybe ska punk fans will realize all they really cared about was playing punk rock with horns and just stick to that and leave the actual ska to the people who value the rhythmic pull of the ska beat and center their music around that concept. Reel Big Fish, if any of you truly care about Ska music, you will leave it alone. It no longer needs you. Maybe it did once, but it's been suffering at your hands for at least a decade now.
That's fuckin' drama right there.

Also, what does punk music mean, exactly? I mean this seriously. My friend once told me a few years ago that he didn't think of the Dead Kennedys as punk rock. He found the arrangements too intricate and the overall musical performance too talented. Does punk just mean bangin' out power chords and bar chords while being really simplistic? I just thought of this 'cause I was thinking about how I sort of thought The Mighty Mighty Bosstones don't really count as Ska Punk, because their music isn't... punk. It's too thoughtfully arranged, from the horns to the guitar. I'd more readily call Slapstick ska punk, because the arrangements and guitar playing are very simplistic. I realize that sounds pretty insulting to every punk fan ever, but I guess this is some kind of stigma I carry with me.

I just realized I asked this on a website where everyday somebody says "I thought this was punknews.org, not musicfordumbassholes.org" in response to a news story they don't deem as punk. So never mind. It's probably just as vague a word as jazz, rock, pop, and classical these days.

It's always been a vague descripter. Think of the fact that at one point you had bands as diverse as The Damned, Blondie, X, Social Distortion, Black Flag, The Dickies, The Ramones and The Clash all being "punk" and being awfully varied.

That said, I had an old boss who said he didn't think of Bad Religion as a punk band which just confused the hell out of me.

Forget that, think of the fact that at one point you had bands as diverse as Blondie, Talking Heads, Mink DeVille, the Ramones, Patti Smith, The Cramps and Television all being called "punk" (and actually being so). Crazy kids and their terminology...I'm too tired to argue over this today.

Arguing in favor of ska-punk is like arguing in favor of Communism: sure, there are tons of people (of questionable intelligence) who support it, but at the end of the day, it will always and forever be a fundamentally flawed concept responsible for the deaths of many.

I'll admit, 'Turn the Radio Off' is a delicious slice of '90s cheese, but I still maintain that 'Cheer Up!' was the band at their "creative best", if I can use that term in relation to Reel Big Fish. It was a huge step forward for the band; too bad close-minded ska kids had to trash it and intimidate the band back into reliving 1996 with each successive release.
