Ben Hendricks - Annabel

Annabel

  1. Des Ark - Don't Rock the Boat, Sink the Fucker
Waited a long time for this one and it did not disappoint. It feels like a culmination of all her strengths. The soft, tender ballads and the power rockers all came together perfectly for this one.
  2. Wye Oak - Civilian
Took a minute to click with me, but when it did I probably listened to this more than any other record this year. I love the consistent feel of this the whole way through.
  3. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
I'll admit to being way too into when it first came out, but I can't deny the beauty of this thing. All of these songs are gorgeous and it's impossible to not get put in that "place."
  4. Cloud Nothings - Cloud Nothings
A great band from Cleveland that writes some really catchy gems. Part pop-punk, part lo-fi indie, this is just a fun record. Their new album is going to destroy 2012 though.
  5. M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
When I listen to new M83 records for the first time, I'm always skeptical they'll be able to top their last, but they always do. This one defines the word EPIC.
  6. Saintseneca - Last
Columbus band that really deserves a lot more attention than they get. Their sound live just fills up an entire room with such quiet instruments. The song writing is top-notch and there are some really special ones here.
  7. The War On Drugs - Slave Ambient
This is the kind of record that isn't hard to like. There are some really great ambient sounds going around the folk rock. It sounds like if Bob Dylan or Tom Petty started a band after listening to a bunch of shoegaze. "Baby Missiles" is a clear highlight.
  8. Drake - Take Care
After Kanye's last album, I needed something to fill that void once I had over-played everything on My Dark Beautiful Twisted Fantasy. I'm just a sucker for the down-tempo souled-out hip-hop with awesome hooks.
  9. Good Luck - Without Hesitation
It's Good Luck, what can I say? More of the same from everybody's favorite power trio. Matt and Ginger just shred and can't really write a bad song.
  10. By Surprise - Mountain Smashers
Rob and the boys really put out a treat with this one. With much of the noodly-twinkly thing starting to get really played-out, these guys wrote a record of crucial jams and it actually sounded like they cared about it too.

Christopher Larsen - Banquets

Banquets

  1. Metallica "LULU"
Thinking they had already recorded the lemons of lemons with load and reload and death magnetic and stranger, I was confused by how two of my favorite artists could destroy themselves so well. Like hanging out Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, I just couldn't stop smoking crack with these two who were destined to turn my brain to mush.
  2. Iron Chic "Not Like This"
Came out in 2010 I think, but I haven't stopped listening to it.
  3. Into It. Over It. "Proper"
Somewhere between The Anniversary, Death Cab, and Daytrader. Dude rules.
  4. Yelle "Safari Disco Club"
    Présente les règles Goddamn
  5. Luther "Siblings and Seven"
Had it for awhile now and still listening to it almost daily
  6. Fit for an Autopsy "The Process of Human Extermination"
Bunch of beard dudes running on rainbows beating each other up with unicorn testicles
  7. Static Radio "We Are All Beasts"
    Catchy but ball starved
  8. Look Mexico "Real Americans Spear It"
Just got into these guys and love this album
  9. Decapitated "Carnival is Forever"
Not their best album, but still it's Decapitated
  10. Sharks Keep Moving "Self-Titled"
Old album, but I still listen to it constantly and I don't think many people listen to them. Jazzy mellow post hardcore stuff with the singer from Minus the Bear.
