The Aquabats Super Show to debut in March

The Aquabats have released a short teaser for their upcoming television show, "The Aquabats Super Show" which will make its debut this year on the Hub Network.

The Aquabats Super show was picked up by the Hub Network in March of last year and was set to be released last fall but due to unknown delays the shows premiere was postponed indefinitely. However, according to a press release from the movie web the show is set to debut this March. The original pilot debuted back in 2008 which you can read more about here. You can watch the aforementioned teaser video as well as a video chronicling the Aquabats various attempts at making a television show below.

When they renamed that network "The Hub", me and my friends first thought was pornhub.com, which we lovingly refer to as "The Hub".

Speaking of bad tv, who wants to get together and watch the premiere of "Work It" tonight?!

Oop, I guess I submitted this news too late....back when it was formally announced in March. And when they had the press conference and released the official promo in July.

Still, better late than never. Now all that's left is to watch The Hub go bankrupt by February.

Don't know why no one ever posted about it before. However, when I posted about the more recent update of the show debuting this March I decided to give a brief history of the Aquabats and their several endeavors into creating a tv show. You know, for all the people this might just be hearing about the show for the first time.

What's interesting is when I submitted this news a few days ago, I happened to provide ALL of the links featured above, sourcing the Movie Web link and even providing links to the Comic-Con video, the PunkNews post on the pilot, and the corporate.discovery.com press release. Hmm...

However, the prose is radically different and I didn't provide links to the 'Super Show!' Facebook or The Hub, so I'm not pointing fingers or anything. Life is too short to argue over who submitted what to "Punk News", but it's never too short to still yell profanities at people on said website.

When I was working on my original post I went through the queue and saw your submission. I won't deny that I took the link you had from the Hub's original announcement last March but to be honest you just saved me a 3 minute google search. I'm a huge aquabats fan, seen them 30+ times, am an official registered cadet, and I've been closely following the show. I even talked to Jimmy about it at their last show at the Glasshouse. You aren't the only Aquabats fan here Matt.

I'm aware I wouldn't have been the only person submitting this news; I honestly don't care whether or not I see my name on a news submission, all I care about is finally seeing 'Super Show!' after all this time. Were you at the pilot taping? I honestly don't remember much about the event....I'd never seen so many drugs in all my life.

If The Aquabats and Trevor Horn ever waged a war against one another for some reason, I'd have a hell of a hard time picking a side.

i dunno. i heard some early stuff way back when, hated it, stopped paying attention, and i think travis barker was in the band. whom i cordially detest. so all in all, i always wrote them off as an inferior goldfinger. i could be wrong.

I don't think even my fellow Aquacadets would take offense if I stated it's no surprise The Aquabats formed just to milk the then-current ska fad (though at least they actually had roots in older ska bands; Goldfinger just half-heartedly jumped on the bandwagon), but once they came into their own and ditched the genre, they went from generic to brilliant. 'The Floating Eye of Death' and 'Myths & Legends' are both excellent and ambitiously eclectic albums with surprisingly sharp musicianship. It's like someone threw Oingo Boingo, Zappa, Toy Dolls, TMBG and The B-52s in a blender and strained it through a Japanese toy commercial. How does that not have "Skibz" written all over it?

It's a supremely entertaining album once it grows on you. I'd consider it the thematic successor to 'The Fury...', except that it's far better because it barely has any ska in it, of course.

Your comment seems contradictive...it's terrible but a step in the right direction? Are you calling 'Charge!!' a misstep?

Also, I don't tout 'H5S!' as one of their best efforts, but, come on, "The Shark Fighter!"? "The Legend is True!"? One would have to do some serious explaining to justify how they would call themselves an Aquabats fan and not dig those tunes.

It's a step in the right direction of subject matter. It's back to the more goofy/sarcastic lyrics of Vs. The Floating Eye and Myths Vol 2. It was just way TOO goofy. The Shark Fighter is an awesome song though. They just need to change up their instrumentation, not everything needs to be straightforward new-wave pop.

Charge!! was good though.

Not convinced. How many times have they said this? Anyways, a couple of years ago I would have been stoked, now I'm not sure. They've allways been hilarious stupid and quirky, but now they've become more childish than funny. Gonna watch it though (uhm, yeah, I'm norwegian).

What's not to be convinced about this time? It's finally in the can; they've filmed actual episodes and promos have already aired on The Hub. The only thing that would keep it from airing at this point are unforeseen circumstances, such as, I dunno, if they all exploded in a bus crash or something, but even then, I'd assume The Hub would still air the episodes in memoriam.

Also, the only thing that has changed about The Aquabats is their sound. Their humor and antics are still the same as they've always been. Some people just tend to outgrow it.

Hopefully you're right. It seems like it is happening this time. But they've been close before also, close, but no cigar. This time it seems like the cigar's even lit and the smoke on the way down MC Bat Commanders throat.

I feel like Charge!!! had more "mature" lyrics. Well, "mature"'s maybe not the right word, but I felt that the humour was more refined and that it was better written than their previous efforts. Hi-Five Soup felt to me like they fell back to the way to immature silliness of before. Of course, I really enjoy Hi-Five Soup, as I do with all of their efforts, both ska and new wave-popunk-whatever, but some of those lyrics seemed a bit to childish.

Still, there is something wrong when you disuss the seriousness, maturity etc. when you talk about The Aquabats!

People are always polarized over each album's lyrical content. I remember when 'Myths & Legends' came out, some people ripped on it as being "preschool music" because the songs were about pool parties and pizza. Then when 'Charge!!' came out, a lot of people complained that the lyrics were too serious and not like old Aquabats. Now they're complaining 'H5S!' is too childish. The 'Bats can never catch a break.

I admired the more subtle/satirical humor on 'Charge!!', but I think the band still needs a level of cartoonish zaniness, and 'H5S!' splits it reasonably enough down the middle. Being that they're *The Aquabats*, of all bands, I expect more "Mechanical Ape!" than I do "Waterslides!", and, compared to the lyrical weirdness of their early albums, I believe 'Soup' is more or less a "refined wackiness". Compare the lyrics of "Magic Chicken" to "Shark Fighter"...they're both funny/weird songs, but the latter's humor is more subtle than the blatant randomness of the former. I saw it more as a progression than a regression; they were using their newer "mature" songwriting skills on the "immature" subject matter of before, and I thought that made for much more potent material.

If you wanted an honest answer, an Aquabats TV show has been in development since 1997, but this is the first one that's gotten greenlit; they've been shopping the pilot since 2008. The first video in the post goes into greater detail than I could ever hope to explain. -_-
