Media: Green Day: “Oh, Love”

As promised, Green Day has posted the first single from the first of their three upcoming albums. The song is called "Oh, Love" and it comes from ¡Uno! which is due out September 25, 2012 and was described as the "power-pop" album of the trilogy.

I remember when I was 13 being so excited for Insomniac to be released after they played "Armatage Shanks" when opening at the MTV music awards back in the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imsg0Yl_nJg .I still came remember just wanting to tune in to see Green Day play but my jaw dropped in excitement with the drum beat starting off the the sound of Armatage Shanks playing and just thinking in my brain being that 13 year old little kid like" omg this is a new Green Day song,no fucking way".....It came out of nowhere and was a big surprise for all. I wonder why they never picked this as a single. I love this song and still to this day any time I hear it i am reminded of that moment As soon as the drumbeat starts

The last Green Day song I really loved was "Letterbomb." And while I though American Idiot was a great record with a handful of lackluster singles, I feel that everything since then has been riding the same wave, musically-speaking. I'm not expecting them to stay snotty and angry into their 40's, but a little edge to the tunes would be a welcomed relief. And yeah, I know Green Day was never that edgy of a band, but you know what I mean.

It just sucks that I find myself lowering my standards when hearing any new tracks by these guys. I guess I'd rather be listening to A Wilhelm Scream.

That was just 5 minutes of mediocre to bad. But, to their credit, at least it wasn't "Cruising California (Bumping In My Trunk)" Offspring terrible.

Know Your Enemy is the worst song this band has ever written and that was the lead single for the last album.

Absolutely agree that Know Your Enemy is the band's utter lowest point. The fact that it was the lead single thankfully made it a strong enough warning sign for the quality of the whole album (I liked American Idiot a lot, so 21CB was a huge disappointment for me). Unfortunately, this one is probably the third or fourth weakest single of their careers, behind KYE, 21 Guns, and maybe Wake Me Up When September Ends (the blight on an otherwise great record).

It feels like a very generic and uncreative song. I'm shocked it's the first single, as I can't see how they'd think it was catchy enough to warrant massive radio exposure. Say what you will about something as atrocious as 21 Guns, but when I first heard that song I thought, "This is terrible, and it's going to be a gigantic hit". Oh Love feels like a song buried at the end of some forgotten album by any number of power pop bands.

I don't know I saw the musical and thought it was pretty fun. It was cheesy but I had low expectations and enjoyed it a lot.

It sounds like Green Day. If you liked Green Day from '97 to 2000, then why you'd think this is terrible makes no sense to me at all. Are you sure you're just not getting nostalgic for the things you've liked as a kid? That I can understand.....it doesn't mean this is "terrible" though....it means you don't need any more Green Day albums

I'll agree that it's needlessly long - and remember, I'm the guy who loves 20-minute songs - but I like it. It doesn't sound like "lead single" material, but if it's any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, then I'm pleased. Then again, I seem to be the only one who actually has high hopes for this trilogy.

I'm still holding out hope for the records, I just hope this song isn't indicative of an overall inability to self-edit. I don't WANT to believe that we're getting 3 records just because Billie Joe thinks everything he writes is golden (despite, I will admit, recent evidence to the contrary, even though I didn't mind 21CB), but I can't imagine this song being as long as it is for any reason other than ego, which is not promising in the long run. I'm still looking forward to the records though, because I'll always have a blind spot when it comes to Green Day and I know I'll get something out of 'em regardless.

I actually agree with you for once on your statement Skibz. Yes it is a little to long clocking in at the 5 minute mark but after listening to this a few times already it does not drag along as a dreaded 5 minutes but a pleasant 5 minutes . I have to say when I 1st heard the sample of this weeks ago and the live version that has been on youtube I was like errrrr. Like how they spoke about in there Rolling stones interview how Uno was going to be a power pop back to basic Green Day of old I was like many of us who was like YES but did not get that vibe until now. Now with this being the first of 4 singles to come from Uno I'm liking the simple 3 chord progression with the simple drum beat on this track.I am really looking forward to the rest of this album . If they do live up to the hype and keep it simple then I think Uno will make its mark on many fans from old to new. .. Now with this song being 5 minutes long Green Day had the potential to kill the whole song if they did not keep it simple. Like around the 2:40 minute mark it takes that turn going into the 3 minute mark and rite there until it goes to about 3:29 they nailed it because they could have ruined the song if they did not keep it simple.The instrumental style rite there reminds me kind of like what they use to do with kerplunk and 1,039 . Kind of like what they should have done with the song 21st century breakdown. With the 21stCB single they over did it with the repetitive refrains and unneeded solos and adding 2 songs as one.(Now if they constructed this single as the way I construct this comment it would be a flop,lol. Sorry a little drunk rite now but I hope you get what i'm trying to explain Skibz) I have High hopes for this trilogy as well. I really enjoyed when Warning came out and how it showed the band maturing. i still don't understand why many people always hated on that album. And yes with American Idiot I have to say I truly enjoyed what they did with the whole thing. But with the time after AI up til before the release of 21st Century Breakdown and them putting out the junk they did with songs like them covering Working Class Hero and The Saints Are Coming had me like oh no. Months ago on youtube I came across them covering this gem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAgKwA7-GLI and I was really impressed by them for the 1st time in years. Then seeing the cover they also did with Hybrid Moments had my hopes raised even higher before any news of a trilogy. Speaking of cover songs I still want to see what they did with The Crass song they have in there vault that Billie Joe spoke about being recorded when they where in the studio recording 21st CB and releasing it as a B-side. Well sorry for my Drunken Medicated rant of a reply. I'm just happy after hearing this new single and agree when you say...... "It doesn't sound like "lead single" material, but if it's any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, then I'm pleased."....................

I don't like the musical arrangement of the song. With the lyrics and structure of the song, it sounds like it could've easily been something like we heard on Nimrod, but they slowed it down and made it sound like something from 21CBD.

My thoughts exactly. Admittedly, I've been a fan since '95, and thought AI and 21CBD were pretty good. Maybe it'll grow on me, but it seems bland, thin instrumentation-wise, repetitive (even for GD), and lyrically dull. We'll see how the rest go.

I like it. I don't think it should be the lead single at all though. It's kind of long, and most of the lyrics seem kind of nonsensical, but I like the chorus a lot, and it's better than most of 21CB.

For a live version of this Billie Joe and green day wins but the thing is Billie Joe and Dan Vapid both have a unique voice and delivery that stands out among there peers. What makes Danny Vapid as you say(and are correct about)is Vapid has used his voice and displayed it in various forms in away we have yet to see from Mr. Armstrong.But Billie Joe sings better live,way better .If you look at all the bands Vapid has been playing in over the years and look at the variety of delivery he gives you have to be amazed. Like rite now with Dan Vapid and The Cheats(my top pick for album of the year so far)it basically is The Methadones lineup,and The Methadones could have just reunited. But what makes the band Dan Vapid and The Cheats so great is you get every style of Vapids vocal ability instead of just his Methadones,riverdales,etc voice. Vapid stands out and when he sings and you know it his uniqiue voice just as when Billie Joe sings you know it is him. If you had to compare all of Vapids projects from The Mopes,Sludgeworth,The Riverdales,The Methadones, Noise By Numbers,and The Cheats .VS. Billie Joe with Green Day,Pinhead Gunpowder,The Network,The Foxboro Hot Tubs, and The Boo who comes out on top? Well Vapid would come out on top only for showing the range of his vocal ability that Billie Joe has yet to do the way Vapid has. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of both. If it was not for Billie Joe and Green Day I would have never discovered any of Vapids work. Some may agree with me while some of you may not. Hey but with this trilogy and 3 different styles of albums coming out in the months to be i have a feeling Billie Joe may be taken the crown away but until we can make a further assessment Vapid remains at the top.

Musically, this is quite underwhelming. And lyrically, it might be the laziest Billie has ever been. And this is coming from a hardcore Green Day apologist. However, I still have a lot of hope for the new records. And the guitar solo was pure 1,039/Smooth era GD.

Okay, so as an unwavering champion of Le Green Day, I have to say this is not what I was expecting at all. Now, I did a little research on early Power Pop and found this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=-1viJF2hgl0&NR=1 . It's No Matter What by Bad Finger. Decent song if you ask me. Now, as I compare it to what they're trying to do, I just don't see it on this song. Oh Love sounds very uninspired and I find it boring. I think it's a pile of shit. With that said, I really hope this song isn't an indicator of the rest of the album. In fact, I'm pretty sure it isn't. You can find Stay the Night on Youtube and that song is a killer. I love that old-school GD vibe it has while still sounding fresh. It gives me many boners. Oh Love=sucks. Rest of the album? I still have my hopes.

Green day is about as punk as the Jonas Brothers...and last time I checked it was not the Jonas Brothers who played Mark Zuckerbergs birthday party. And even if they used to be a punk band, well some gangster rappers used to do actual gangster shit like decades ago..but now they are pop icons. This story belongs on an emo message board at best.

I enjoyed the song, though, I think to enjoy it you must first accept the fact that green day isn't the band they were in the 1990's like many "punks" on here who give dookie 4 stars and say american idiot sucked without even listening to it do. They have obviously made the shift to Alternative rock like Blink 182 and other 90's punk bands and if you don't like it I'm fine with that, everyone has an opinion, but don't be a fake punk and not give any of the post-Insomniac material one star because you think it's the "punk" thing to do.
