19-year old woman dies during Warped set

Tragedy hit the Toronto stop of the Warped Tour as a 19-year old Taylor Nesseth died at the Molson Amphitheatre this past Sunday. Toronto newspaper The Toronto Star reported that the woman collapsed during the show, with promoters moving attendees into a covered venue. Given that, it is speculated that the 30°C/86F plus temperatures were involved in her collapse.

Paramedics arrived after being called, but despite being transported to Toronto Western in the highest priority she was pronounced dead at the hospital. This summer has proven to be one of the deadliest in many years, with deaths across the United States at 36 just 10 days after the heat wave began at the beginning of July.

A number of Warped Tour performed tweeted condolences to the young woman, with Hayley Williams of Paramore saying: "My heart and prayers go out to family and friends of the young girl, Taylor, who passed away at Warped Tour today. Rest in peace." Warped Tour organizes have been promising an official statement and account since yesterday but have not said or explained anything yet.

Rest in piece and all that, but this post is very misleading. I've read a few things about it and the authorities publicly announced the cause being "medical" reasons and some sources have said that the girl was known for her drug use.

Still awful, of course.

I love death statistics, because they're always at 10% of what I'd assume. I have a whole book from 1986 that's just an encyclopedia of deaths. In 1982, 1850 people died in cars on the way to the hospital. Not that bad when you consider everything that it entails.

Yeah, I've heard that too. It's a myth. There have been plenty of reported deaths at Disneyland. Kind of hard to deny it when there's a mangled body laying on the tracks of the Matterhorn.

I honestly don't remember which side I was on. Though I will say we were counting every park, resort, ancillary property (wide world of sports, downtown disney, cruises etc etc) It must add up to a fair amount of real estate and people.

A sad story, and I understand heat can be relative depending on your location, but 86 F killed her? I think the last Warped Tour I went to in Charlotte, NC was well over 100 with the heat index in the 110s. Can a temperature that low (yeah, I said it) really kill someone?

If you're fatigued, have a pre-existing condition, de-hydrated and (ALLEGEDLY) have a drug problem, then yes, you probably will die. Hell, even just a few of those and some bad luck can kill you.

Was going to say this, didn't want to come off as rude, but I went to a festival last year and it reached very high 90s and maybe 100. It was brutal, but no one died. 86 is fairly standard for summer, seems like there has to be some other factor.

I went to my first one in 4 years for ETID, Polar Bear Club and a handful of nostalgia. Was a little surprised at the crowd not being as young as I remembered, but it was way easier to get a beer than at other festivals I've been to lately.

Oh, and I ended up next to Matt Toka while watching Emily's Army.

They shut down temporarily due to lightening and thunder, not due to the death. She died around noon, and the crowd wasn't moved to the Amphitheatre until around 4. Sets were back up and running by 5:30.

Bottled water was $3, and the KleenKanteen stations were refilling them for free all day. When I stopped by for refills, there was never a line.
