Boston, MA-based gypsy-punk outfit The Wicked have launched a stream of their new album. The group is compared to similarly inspired acts like Dresden Dolls and Gogol Bordello.

Bad move on everything. The lame "dark" name, the amateur pseudo-goth band picture, citing the Dresden Dolls as an influence...my God, this is practically what my band in high school would have been like had I actually formed it. I need to re-evaluate my life.

The music's not anything too terrible, but in all honesty, how is this considered gypsy punk in any conceivable fashion? It sounds like a watered-down aping of the Dresden Dolls by people who've never heard of the dark cabaret genre and think Panic! at the Disco border on being too "edgy". I didn't detect any gypsy/world rhythmic influences whatsoever, but maybe my judgement is impaired from running on two hours of sleep in two days...or maybe this band just sucks. You make the call.

No, they actually sound pretty good, in my opinion. I went through a dark cabaret phase a long while back, though there are far better artists than the Dolls lurking in the underground. It's a weird scene; I became overwhelmed by the amount of gothic derby hats I'd see at shows and haven't really kept up with any of it since.

At first I just thought PunkNews was taking liberties with genres again (see: Bowling for Soup, the ska band), but after doing some Googling, apparently every piece of coverage relating to this album mentions the words "gypsy-punk", so obviously it's from the press release.

I won't claim to be a gypsy punk expert, but having at least a basic familiarity with the bigger names - Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beat Box, Firewater and Motherhead Bug (whom I both love) - I still call bulls***. A handful of pseudo-cabaret guitar strums floating in a sea of bubblegum-goth pop-rock does not a gypsy ensemble make. Yes, yes, that's not the band's fault, but poor marketing bugs me.

I really enjoy Firewater. I've never heard of Motherhead Bug. Is it along the same lines as Firewater and if one wanted to check them out, where should one start?

They make a good companion piece; both were formed by members of the same band, Cop Shoot Cop. Motherhead Bug only released one album, so it's pretty easy to figure out where to start.
