Teenage Bottlerocket's Ray Carlisle recently performed an acoustic version of "Radical" from the band's latest release, Freak Out! , for Exclaim!.

Teenage Bottlerocket are currently on tour with Masked Intruder.

I'm really surprised that a Teenage Bottlerocket song could sound so good and natural acoustically. They're the last band I'd ever expect to go acoustic and actually make it work, but this song makes me want to hear some of their other stuff unplugged.

I bet some of the love songs like "Wasting Time" would come out pretty well when done acoustic, but not ALL of their songs. "Radio", for example, would be wicked forced and awkward.

Just when you think it couldn't get any worse. Now people actually think it sounds "so good and natural acoustically." I'm hoping so bad that the above comment is sarcasm or joking. Go buy a leather jacket, down stroke a few chords to the same drum beat in every song and sing about absolutely nothing. You too can be just as lazy, uncreative and somehow successful as these chaps. Oh, and don't forget! ...it goes 1,2,3,4!, Intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, shitty guitar solo, chorus, ending, pay us.

I dunno, maybe trying to do something original and creative with the genre rather than relying on a tired formula?

I mean...that's what most, you know, serious musicians would try to do with their music. Then again, I guess if a musician had any original ideas or above-average talent, they wouldn't be playing pop-punk.

Sorry bro, I'll toss a RUSH record on for you. If you want originality then best look elsewhere. The genre was built on three chords. It's going to die on three chords. This music sounds the same day in and day out. It's the passion that most pop/punk hardcore bands exude that makes the genre what it is.

Poppycock, piffleflaps, and lynchdingers. I think with imaginative enough songwriting and some decent instrumentation, with enough varied but subtle rhythmic textures and arrangements, one could make truly worthwhile pop-punk music instead of just having to overly rely on formula...and really, if you're just going to regurgitate a preset sound, then why bother writing music in the first place? Passion doesn't mean anything if the music itself is terrible and/or generic.

If hardcore could evolve into something great, then why not pop-punk? I think we just instinctively lower our standards when it comes to this kind of music, and that allows bands like TBR to perpetuate the negative aspects and stereotypes behind the genre and hold back its progression. Stop it! Death to false Ramones, I say.

Just because it's not original and follows a formula doesn't mean it's bad or uncreative. I'd rather listen to a band following a formula but making the most entertaining music possible within the bounds of that formula than these bands who used to do that and changed their style into something boring for the sake of being more "creative" and "mature".

That's why I'll take this stuff, as predictable and constrained as it may be over the intricately arranged and musically diverse but tremendously boring shit Green Day and Propagandhi are cranking out now. Something catchy, fun, passionate, and energetic (even if it's basically just Ramones 101) is better than something more instrumentally complex, yet pretentious and soulless any day of the week.

That actually DOES mean it's uncreative. In every way. Unoriginal=Uncreative. Synonyms, my friend.

I can understand how a "mature" sound may be boring to some, but something being "boring" BECAUSE it is "creative" also doesn't work for me. Those two words are closer to being antonyms. It might not be your thing, but it wouldn't be boring. Also, Propagandhi are maybe pretentious but they are definitely NOT soulless.

Keep in mind that I've never listened to Teenage Bottlerocket, so I have no opinion of them either way.

You can like whatever you want, there's nothing wrong with that. Just pointing out that words have meanings.

I just saw them with Masked Intruder,, it was a sick show!! I got noodz with TBR and masked, I got a setlist from each band the masked signed by yellow, then I got a glow in the dark "ice age" signed by Brandon from TBR, oh yeah then I got a masked/turkeltons split, (my fourth one) and yellow and blue signed it!!! It was the sickest show I ever. Well I say that after every show.
