Videos: Sonic Boom Six: “Virus”

Ska-punk-hip-hop outfit Sonic Boom Six have released a video for their latest single, "Virus." The song will appear on the band's upcoming self-titled full-length, due out October 15, 2012.

It's nevertheless from a band who purports themselves to be. Or at least, I'm guessing they still might...I haven't listened to SBS since before the start of this decade, so who the hell knows if they've completely abandoned whatever minimal ska influences they originally had?

Besides, ska-punk kids are usually stupid enough to believe anything's ska so long as it either A) has horns, or in this case, B) comes from a band who've had any remote ties with the genre at any point in time no matter what, so this might as well be considered such. Just ask thegimper, this is probably his ska single of the year.

I honestly can't comprehend how someone could consider themselves a fan of a genre without even understanding the mechanics of said genre. Ska's not like punk in that the whole "what is punk?" argument is more ideological than literal, ska is pretty clearly musically defined.

Well, at least the staccato piano in the verses of "VKTRS" lend *some* kind of basis for their misconception...they obviously have a mild grasp on the genre's characteristics. It's better than, say, when I hear dozens of self-proclaimed ska fans call The Aquabats' most straightforwardly power-chord rock songs "ska punk" based entirely on the band's history. That just makes me sad.

Some people just aren't musically perspicacious in that regard. My best friend asked me if some Zutons song was Ska, and not just because of the saxophone. He believed there was a ska guitar rhythm. I checked it out, and the guitar was actually playing a lot of downbeats. Really it was anti-ska.

In this era of the internet, there's really no reason why someone who would call themselves a ska fan couldn't just read one paragraph of a Wikipedia article and learn what the genre actually is. I mean, if you're calling yourself a fan, you're likely spending *some* time searching for music, so why not figure out the most basic f***ing information?

I can forgive casual listeners for not knowing how to fully define a genre, but if you're a "ska fan" who buys CDs from the big bands, goes to shows or even buys the clothing to match, and you have no idea how to tell the difference between a ska song and a rock song, then you're not really a fan, are you?

I would, if these people didn't take up an alarmingly large presence within the contemporary American ska scene. The most vocal and visual ska fans - particularly on the internet - are sometimes the ones who ironically devote the least amount of effort into it, though I'm sure the same could be said of many genres.

I'm trying to approach this as objectively as possible because I know I'm a freak who pours hours upon hours into studying music, yet I can't help but feel it's overall detrimental to a genre/scene when its broader fanbase couldn't immediately identify the music by themselves. A handful of oblivious "idiots" is to be expected, but really, this is unnervingly common in ska music.

You're damn right. Preach it, Skibz! You just know that if the ska scene isn't revitalized by legitimate fans of the genre who can write songs and be good musicians, even 20 years from now, people will still be (erroneously in the case of the last band) saying "My favorite Ska bands are LTJ, Reel Big Fish, and Streetlight Manifesto." A bunch of 14-18 year olds with a passing fancy, and some old fans in their late 30s still reminiscing about Let's Go Bowling and Hepcat.
Do you realize how depressing it is to just look at today's ska scene and even talk about it, everyone who's not Skibz ('cause I know you do)? It's a small fragmented mess, just a bunch of people who still worship Keasbey Nights and Turn the Radio Off, and a few lonely fuckers on amazon digging into the archives of bands from the 80s and 90s yearning for the days of Moon Ska past. It really is just a lot of yearning. It's really just sad.

i like alot of sonic boom six stuff, but this is a bit of a let-down. i agree with most, that the auto-tune needs to go. they have great voices, and should not be muddled with that techno crap. all in all, not their best, but here's hoping the new album has better material

It's funny that with both The King Blues and this lot, their good work got them some attention, so they just turned a little bit shite to have a shot at the mainstream... shame really. Thought New Style Rocker was great mind.

Disagree. They've been throwing tons of different influences into the pot for a decade now, and this is that same process with sounds that they've been easing in over the last couple of albums anyway.
