Media: Coheed and Cambria: ‘The Afterman: Ascension’

Rolling Stone is streaming the new album from progressive rock band Coheed and Cambria, The Afterman: Ascension. The album, which came out this week, is the first part of a two album series from the band; its counterpart, The Afterman: Descension, is due out in February.

You can do that and still not be jackasses. Rush, Uriah Heep, early Queen, most 70s prog/psych/metal...they weren't nearly as self-indulgently "arty" as C&C.

...plus, they were also, you know, good.

And? Naming a song after a constellation isn't the same as naming a song, like, "Descent Into Infinity: An Apocalyptic Fable", etc.

The thing is, Rush were never really pretentious, or at least they didn't succumb to the pomposity of '70s rock any more so than the next band (even KISS released a proggy concept album). Even back when Rush were a prog rock band, they never overtly embellished their songs and lyrics with artsy-schmartsy nonsense, and when they did, it was either done with self-deprecation (the full title of their ten-minute instrumental is "La Villa Strangiato (An Exercise in Self-Indulgence)") or it was something the band now admits they're embarrassed over and refuse to play live anymore. They're too humble to be placed in the same serious-minded league as C&C, or ELP or Yes for that matter.

Not that I wholly expect a community of semi-illiterate punk rockers to understand, but just because something uses big words doesn't automatically give it intellectual merit (just look at Skibz777). There's more to art than the kind of cheap cliches and contrivances bands like C&C flaunt in their song titles (which seem to have more thought put into them than the actual music).

In short, you're not very bright but I still love you.

All I can say is that I'm a fan of this band and their new album is decent, but I'm mostly a fan of the first 3 records. totally not self-indulgent or pretentious or anything like that, it's just fun slightly proggy rock, and the concept/characters/story are fun and interesting from what i'm familiar with, but once again was better on the early albums in my opinion, which I also like because they are super weird and quirky "pop"ish metal. I don't find them to be all that similar to Rush (whom I like) and I think Queen's early stuff is boring as fuck. and I like some boring shit.

Firstly, you gave me a completely civilized response even though I was a dick. That takes integrity and now you have my respect. I shall speak no more ill of you.

Secondly, for what they are, C&C aren't bad, but as someone who regularly listens to prog rock and conceptual albums, I can see where they fall short. They're certainly not the best band of their kind. A few years ago, for example, I saw C&C live because they had Porcupine Tree as tour support. Needless to say, they just couldn't make the right impression on me (I left after three songs). If you like them, neat, but I have tons of other bands I'd turn to for that type of music before C&C.

Thirdly, 'Queen II'? Boring? That just doesn't make sense. Really, it doesn't. Personally, I think anything Queen did after 1977 is best left in the rubbish bin. I mean, "March of the Black Queen"? The three-song suite on 'Sheer Heart Attack'? Really? Hmm.

Sheer Heart Attack is good. I guess it's the first two that seem like they have their moments but as albums they don't really stand up to me.

That's what strikes me as strange since 'Queen II' is their only album structured as such; if I recall, with the exception of "Seven Seas of Rhye", both sides are one continuous piece of music. It has its weak spots (namely Roger's song), but I thought it flows well enough. I thought all of Queen's rock/prog/metal era was exciting...it's only when they started going strictly for pop singles that they became monotonous.

That's what's so lame about it. It's such forced trolling it's awkward to read. I can picture the guy hunched over his keyboard snickering like "omg this is genius". How much fulfillment can you get out of doing this? Apparently a lot since I see the guy in nearly every popular post.

It almost reads like a regular poster with a "joke" account because he hits on certain things like eazyd2 being from Australia...but definitely not funny or engaging at all. blinkrules was similar idea, but he was convincing enough to have people engage with him and not be in on the joke, which it turn was hilarious! This guy just sucks.

I'd ditch both and play 'Power Factory Featuring C+C Music Factory' on Sega CD. Sega CD wins out over almost any band in existence.
