Media: Tegan and Sara: “I'm Not Your Hero”

Tegan and Sara have unveiled another new song from their upcoming album. The song is called "I'm Not Your Hero," and will appear on the duo's Heartthrob, due out in January.

aside from them being really good, and that Northshore song, is there any particular reason the punk community is so into Tegan and Sara. I don't think there's too many artists who are that sonically removed from punk that have such a universal audience in the punk community. Not complaining, hell knows i'm certainly one of those fans, but it's a weird phenomenon.

I don't see where it's universal at all. They fit in with air of indie bands. Lots of 'punk' fans also tend to gravitate towards indie rock too.

I think it's more that they have some connections, even tangentially, to some punk acts (collabs with Against Me!, Alk Trio, and AFI). Also, they're really good.

I would also suggest that its because a good deal of their music, while sounding poppy, has a very dark, almost joy divison-ish edge to it. Both so jealous and the con get pretty morose at points, but still "sound" exciting.

As a fan of Tegan & Sara, even I agree they shouldn't be on here, but w/e it's not really a big deal. ...also, Tegan by a mile.

Wow. I consider myself a casual fan of this band (I really love the album The Con, haven't heard much else), but that is quite awful. I wonder what made them head into such overwhelmingly bland radio-friendly pop territory. I know a lot of people on this site loves T&S. Does this sound like a logical continuation of their sound? To me it seems like an obvious attempt to find mainstream success, but I haven't heard Sainthood so maybe they've been going this way for years.

I'm trying to reserve judgement until I hear the whole album. If you look at some of the tracks on Sainthood and collaborations they've done in the interim period, I think you could point to a growing interest in this kind of sound. It's kind of disappointing, but I'm hoping for some of the quirkier and more interesting tracks to complement the poppier ones on the upcoming LP.

I have been a fan of Tegan and Sara since the beginning. No two albums of theirs really sound alike. Its a huge leap from The Con (and maybe even Sainthood) but i also think its a natural step forward. They were raised in the 80's and 90's with a lot of pop influences so I'm not surprised by this new direction their taking. Between their last album and this upcoming one they have done tons of collaborations with what you would call "pop" artists. They have found something they like. And while it may not be what we expected its the music they wanna play. No one wants to hear the same album over and over again. They have said in recent interviews that "They have done the whole indie-folk, indie-rock scene. Now they are making it into the indie-pop scene." After listening to the two songs that they have released off of Heartthrob I start to think along the lines of Ellie Goulding, Two Door Cinema Club, and Metric. All considered indie bands, but all also all very electronic and popish. Perhaps it is a play for mainstream radio success. But after over 12 years of being in the industry, shouldn't everyone agree that they deserve it? And when people start saying in the masses, "Hey have you heard of this new band?! There're called Tegan and Sara! I heard them on the radio yesterday." I'll be able to sit back and think to myself about how they have grown as artists. How they have changed and matured.
No matter what, its still the T+S i have come to know and love. The lyrics, the hooks, the voices. All the same. This time its just set to a more electronic and catchy tune.
