Videos: Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!) featured on MTV's “House of Style”

Against Me! lead singer, Laura Jane Grace, recently let MTV into her home for their show, "House of Style". The segment focuses on Grace's every day life as a transgender individual.

My life improves every single day. I try to make a step every single day, no matter how big or how small... It feels like I'm in control of my life, and I'm in control of my person, and that's empowering. Saying to someone 'I'm a transsexual' is the most empowering thing I've ever felt in my whole life.

Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender earlier this year in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine. She has since been working on Against Me!'s new album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues .

You'll note that when Grace is flipping through her record collection, the producers chose to focus on her pulling out both Farce and The Eps of RP by Rudimentary Peni. The band was named by Grant Matthews of the band. "When I was at school studying biology, we were told that in the fetal stage the clitoris is a rudimentary penis."

Do you think this is of significance, or is just coincidental?

I think this assumes that they had the knowledge of her record collection, before hand, to know that she would pull those records out specifically during the segment.
So I think it's coincidence.

It's just 'Laura'...but if you watch the piece she says that she is doing things like this interview to be able to show trans-youth that they are normal, and are accepted, etc.

I find that not only punk, but inspiring as well.

I have never like AM! And I had always really disliked Tom Gabel cuz he seemed really pretentious and it also seemed like he was constantly looking for media attention. I don't see Laura Jane as very different. This might seem mean or whatever but if she wanted to help transgender teens feel normal than she shouldn't be anywhere near MTV. They support and cultivate the exact culture she claims to want to stop. Especially the show House of Style. She should do an interview on a real news network or even one of the national ones. Going thru her punker than thou record collection isn't educating people on transgender lifestyle. All of this seems so contrived it just kinda pisses me off. And I don't mean her coming out as transgender, but I do think Rolling Stone is the wrong medium again. They are just as bad as MTV yet that's where she chose to reveal this amazing truth about herself. She didn't write anything personally or think of a positive message to send to troubled youth, she sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone and got fucking paid for it. Just like she was paid to be on that MTV show.

She chose these outlets based on the number of people she could reach with her message. It's that simple. She could have done it in some obscure punk zine, bit it wouldn't have been seen by anyone outside of that very small subculture, which would have been mostly accepting of it anyway. That really doesn't do much for the plight of trans people as a whole.
