Fat Wreck Chords has signed Get Dead from San Francisco, CA. The largely acoustic band has a bunch of music on Bandcamp and are currently at Motor Cities working on their debut for a summer release.

Let me try this.... Old Man Marley or Markley or whatever, who I do think are terrible, are folky/blue grassy. Big trend in "indie rock" now is folky/banjo shit, ie, Lumineers, Mumford and Sons. So, my deduction is that halfwit is referring to that as indie??? I think. Make sense??

I was at that show...some of their friends were wasted and got kicked out. While outside their friends got into a fist fight with random other people at the show. Dunno what that has to do with the band...though I must admit it left a bad taste in my mouth regarding the band. I'd liked them up until that point.

Don't you think it's kinda excessive to blame a band for their drunk friends actions? I think that's very dismissive and narrow. You can't control other peoples actions unless you're submitting them and that's no fun.

Bands are constantly banned from venues, kicked off shows/tours or not allowed on tours because of the behavior of their fans and friends. Nothing new.

I'm a bartender. I've 86'd people because of their friends before. You're judged by the company you keep. If you coming in (or your band coming in) is going to bring in people that will fight, cause problems, stiff tabs, etc, you can't come in either.

I havn't bought a Fat release since SOIA's Live In A Dive, but looking at that list - even I knew about all of those releases. 75% of 'em are NOFX and Lagwagon reissues and the other few are frequently covered here.

Nope, but then I would literally have no connection at all to that world - so that's to be expected.

It's "big fish, little pond"-syndrome, but it's all good. Slimming down and catering to that is a great business decision.

1. I can think of plenty of signings.
2. The amount of signings they've had in the last few years is a perfect companion to the down-sizing they did a few years ago.

They're not going anywhere. They pick up smaller bands and still do incredibly well on the catalogue front.

Honest question: how much more gas in the tank does the Lagwagon or NUFAN catalog have, esp on CD? I'm sure anytime they crank something out on vinyl, it'll sell a moderate amount of copies, and to some extent, there's some profit in the digital, but will Fat's catalog keep the doors open?

The Lagwagon box sets sold so incredibly fast, I don't know what you're talking about, even the CD ones. And as long as they keep putting out limited color vinyl releases they'll stay in business for quite some time. That shit sells like hotcakes. NOFX limited releases have been selling out in less than 24 hours, even that ridiculously priced box set with all of the albums on vinyl went within a day. I guarantee that NUFAN tribute will sell fantastically well if it indeed ever comes out.

Quite a bit, since there are places on this planet where people don't just whine about shit on the internet.

It's easy to stick to being jaded, but fact of a matter is that kids get into "punk rock" every single day. The cross-breeding/resurgence of several scenes actually ensure that quite a big chunk of kids just want to not care about any of that and just listen to some fast music with guitars and melodies. They might not be as loud-mouthed about it - but they vote with their wallet.

I still own my little record store and we still have around 200-250 customers a day. We pretty much carry exclusively punk, metal and noise stuff and half of the people shopping are ones who are picking up the same kind of records I picked up when I was 14. Whenever it's not scandinavian crust, they start with Minor Threat/Operation Ivy/Gorilla Biscuits and then they either go off to cool hardcore or fat/epi stuff. The people who gravitate towards fat/epi stuff tend to be the one we see the most, whereas the people going into more trend-sensitive stuff tend to not show up again and instead opt for downloading.

Don't get me started on vinyl. It's barely a blip on the radar compared to good catalogue cd's. Even when a classic record is released on vinyl - the cd will still out-sell it that month, without that number being higher than normal. I'd also argue that the profit is too slim for any label to actually make money on it unless you're going to sell a sub-par product. A big record you'll most definitely be aware of got re-released a year ago and I have on good authority that the european run was 6000 records. We got 400 of those, which is obviously a large chunk of it. We're down to 150 right now, whereas the cd is on 850 for that period. It's not astronomical or anything, but I've seen a lot of promotion and talk about that record from collectors and it still doesn't match up to the gen stats. I mean, we've probably had 100+ calls about it, yet only 250 people have bought it.

If you asked me ten years ago, I probably would've guessed that there'd be a new set of records representing certain styles and scenes... But that didn't really happen.

We don't over-stock, but I just did an inventory check and we have in fact sold around a thousand records of all of those re-releases. That's pretty amazing. Hell, 1/3 of them seem to have been mail-order with people buying the whole set.

If you really disassociate yourself from it, I think you'll agree that it's very likely that it'll stick since we're in two-thousand fucking thirteen and it's still around. They'll definitely stick around, especially with their ownership in that studio, which is a great service itself, if it's still $6500 for a month including lodging.

To cap it off with a fun fact, would you ever have guessed that we're constantly out of 1208 - Feedback Is Payback? We buy 10-15 copies every time and they're always out. Our supplier gave us a call saying that he can't find any more copies anywhere - so we'll have some bummed out kids. Such a weird band/record to live on. A friend of mine who owns a store sells Useless ID records in the thousands every month. Would you ever have guessed that?

I agree with most of what you said. I'm just not seeing a lot of young kids getting into the 90s Epifat stuff anymore. Could just be where I'm at, but I don't ever see young kids in those shirts, or even young kids when those bands play. Even NOFX, who were forever, the "feeder" band (ie, you got into them at 15, and by the time you were 21, you'd moved on and were replaced by new 15 year olds), seem to be getting older crowds and I see FAR less kids at their shows. Maybe bands like the Menzingers and Off with their Heads, etc are turning kids onto the Lagwagons and what not, but I'm just not seeing it. Again, I could be looking in the wrong places.
And yeah, Gorilla Biscuits, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Op Ivy will continue to sell as long as there's still people on the planet. But looking at those examples, and labels: Revelation is still around, but lives on back catalog and has released what, 1 or 2 new bands in the past couple of years? Dischord is a total different animal. SST I guess releases shit, but does anyone care? Total catalog label. Lookout, well, we saw them fumble the ball bigtime, and that shows how a label with a great catalog can totally fuck up their shit.
Vinyl, you are 100% correct. I say this every time someone mentions the "vinyl resurgence." It's such a tiny blip on the radar. A lot of the "hype" bands who "sell out preorders so quickly" are selling out 1500 or 2500 records most of the time, which in the grander scheme, isn't saying much.
The 1208 and Useless ID thing baffles me.
Do you sell much black metal?

Yeah, if there's one obvious thing I've totally realized this year - it's that it's all in the company you keep.
You know what? I've seen maybe 5 shirts of modern hardcore bands in the last 5 years. I think the last one was a Cold World one. Why did that make me laugh? I havn't heard a single person talk about Loma Prieta, Code Orange Kids or Enabler in real life. They sure do on the internet though.

Regarding NOFX, you're totally right. They don't go to shows, they're not big on social media, they have some kind of connection to skateboarding and they might've heard that a band they liked might or might've not played a certain place 45 minutes away two or three years ago. That doesn't mean that they don't listen to the stuff every single day, though. They simply have no interest in seeing a band who released their last listenable record in 2003 and how could you blame them? I think it says a lot that NOFX will always play main stages on festivals. I mean, we sold 300 copies in-store of the new Pennywise with Zoli first month and very few of them had any idea about the fact that they had a new lead singer. They want new tunes and don't really feel any need to be anything other than the dude who listens to fast punk rock and doesn't take himself too seriously. I love that.

Rev decided to wind-down early, didn't they? Even when they had stuff like Curl Up And Die and On The Might Of Princes, they felt like they were shifting their focus. SST and Discord? Well, we always order 10-20 copies of what they do, it sells, but we don't really re-stock it unless an employee really wants to put an editorial spin on it.

I just think Fat Wreck did well. They didn't mismanage anything and they're still doing well in catalogue as well as putting out a few new melodic punk rock bands a year. That's really all you can ask for. They had their early 00's "Your major label dropped you, eh?"-moment that Side One Dummy, Roadrunner and Rise all adopted later, but they knew when to wind down. If we ever meet, we're talking about The Fight.

When I said thousands per month - I mean it. Over a thousand Useless ID records a month. Absolutely unreal. I mean, Millencolin - maybe, but Useless ID?!

We keep it simple when it comes to black metal. We get a curated, bi-monthly package from a Norwegian distro, we carry Profound Lore and it definitely gets people in who normally wouldn't come. There's a bleed to the noise stuff we carry, which is the main reason why we do it. The store being where it is, we're never going to _own_ metal, but we'll keep supporting that distro because they definitely know what they're doing and they always end up selling. I thought we'd see some bleed from bands like Deafheaven, Liturgy and all those other bands, but again - people who buy cd's don't care about what the internet has to say about new bands.

Would you be surprised by the fact that we don't carry a lot of the generic stuff that'd be considered "orgcore"? I think Exister sold two copies and one of them were returned.

..We really are going to have a chat about The Fight someday, though.

Regarding your comment about Enabler, Code Orange and Loma Prieta; you're so right on. If those three bands toured together, they'd be lucky to get 100 people in big cities, and 50 most places. But, if you read about them online, they're "HUGE." Had a friend on tour with a band who COK opened for. He said, nightly, there were 4 or 5 kids there to see them singing along, but they generally got, at best, a luke warm response. This was a person who had no reason to not shoot straight. Reading internet comments about that tour, you'd honestly think every person left the venue after them.

I read all of the comments and decided to check this out, and what I heard was a Swingin' Utters/ HWM hybrid without any real originality except they were playing acoustic guitars. But that's not necesarrily that bad but i like both of those bands, just not at the same time, theres nothing new here. It makes sense for Fat oddly enough though, because it sounds like a band that someone heard and thought 'Mike would like this' and he did, and here you go. There's a little Old Man Markley in there, and Fat Mike sure did blow a load all over them, Swingin' Utters before them and still. Rightfully so on the Utters' part if ya ask me.

I wish that the inactive bands on FAT would start putting stuff out as opposed to all of these new signings - which I do like a good number of, but the older bands have stayed relatively quiet (or dead). A new Diesel Boy album would be the best news ever. Can someone make that happen?
