Tours: Face to Face (west coast)

Face to Face have announced a number of west coast tour dates this spring, including a show with Bad Religion. The band is set to release Three Chords and a Half Truth on April 9, 2013 via Rise Records.

I would say, musically, Face to Face is a more similar to BR than the Bronx is, and also shares much of the same fan base.

They don't share "much," as BR are significantly bigger, but I'm sure most f2f fans are BR fans. Which is actually a good reason to NOT have them as support on a tour.

Yeah that's actually a really good point. I always thought it was weird to see for example bands like AWS touring with ska bands and other groups not necessarily in their scene or genre, but it must be a great way to introduce people to your music who might not be exposed to it otherwise.

You don't want a band who are going to bring the same people who'd already be at your show, supporting you.

You know I generally agree etc, but doing exactly that can definitely be a strategy when numbers are low across the board.

For example, let's say BR's numbers go down. A portion punk rock-centric fan-base have seen them play the hits 5 times in 10 years and don't give a damn about a new record - so they can't longer pull off getting a baby-sitter, get parking, get time off etc.

A sure-fire way to get them back is to put together a "remember the good times?" bill, consisting of all the bands they used to play with. I mean, the Reel Big Fish/Goldfinger cross-section of fandom is very, very close (especially in the states), but a good chunk of people stay home whenever they're playing solo with other ska/pop punk acts.

A great agent is someone who can balance those both of those types of bills.

Me and a friend started an all-dayer in 2004 with a 10 dollar charge and 30 people attending. By 2008 - we had quadrupled the ticket price and still sold 2500 tickets. We were all about people having reasons to go. We knew we were doing something right when hardcore kids complained about us, because that meant that they were buying tickets despite it being a very varied bill. We got them to spend 40 dollars to see 4-5 local hardcore bands who'd normally play to 30 people, while some people went purely for the headliner. It's a very tricky thing to figure out and you simply have to pay attention to what people are saying and figure out why different kinds of people would want to attend.

So, what would my "remember the good times?"-tour be if BR headlined?

Bad Religion
Big 90's band from California
Band fronted by an 80's hardcore legend
A new, really heavy band who'd open up the show nicely

So I guess...
Bad Religion, Pennywise, Off! and Black Breath, maybe?

Kinda boring, but that's exactly the point of that type of billl. It's "Remember Punk Rock?!?!?".

I imagine each approach has its benefits, and it's just a matter of knowing which to take at what point in a band's career. Pennywise, though, with BR....Let's at least make it the Vandals instead. Assuming they ever actually tour the states outside Cali. And what's this Black Breath; should I check them out?

Pennywise would make ten times more people tip over than Vandals would. It's not about your taste.

We're talking about people who went to a few radio festivals in the 90s when The Offspring were headlining. 32+. Maybe 10% of them will go because of Vandals, but you'd have to had spent more than 4 months with blue hair and a skate board to get stoked about The Vandals.

Sure, check them out if something that sounds like a great punk/metal combo without being crossover sounds good to you. I was just thinking about a band who would work like Gallows did when they opened up for BR five years ago. That was a great combo for BR.

One of the best shows I've seen was Lungs from Sydney, A Wilhelm Scream and Less than Jake.
None of those bands are too similar. I don't want to go to a show and hear the same style of music over 3-4 sets.
Each to their own though.

I'm squarely in the demographic of those that are more likely to go to a show if it's stocked w/ several bands I want to see rather than see one band I love (and have likely seen before) w/ openers that I'm not familiar with or are not into. Being at the point in my life where I have kids and spend over 100 days a year on the road (and not "maybe I can check out this show in a new city" on the road, more like "breakfast meeting @ 6:30 finishing w/ a work dinner @ 9 and work in my hotel room after that" on the road), I only get to go to 3 or 4 shows a year, so I'm much more likely drawn if it's a stacked bill. That said, you have a good point - in most cases, it's not my demographic that are going to pay the bills. We do have more money to spend on better beer than we did @ 19 though, so I'm sure the venue appreciates us ;) It's a shame really, I spend most of my life living in places where I had to drive 3-4 hours to get to venues that "bigger" (i.e. most of the bands mentioned above) punk bands would play. Now, I'm within an hour of several venues and can rarely go. Isn't that the way?

You're still a lot more clued-in than the people an agent would cater for if they need to get the non-active fans in.
A normal BR bill is probably flip-a-coin for you, right? Either you like it or you don't, whereas the non-active fan wouldn't even look twice at BR/Against Me/Polar Bear Club.

You're in-between and an agent would be happy if you went to see the band every other year, which usually tends to be on record release tours.

What I find the most interesting about that is that the "remember the good days?"-crowd are the ones who'll make it a family-outing whereas the "lifers" don't. That's interesting from quite a few points of view and says a lot about how people "mature".

I'm personally in the "I don't like going to shows"-camp. I go to festivals and just watch everything, the rest of the year I either get dragged to shows or stumble upon them. I'm very much over the whole anticipation thing, so my type is the one agents hate. I don't drink either, so I'm also hated by venues.

Assuming the F2F & BR show is the Mesa, AZ date. That's when BR is supposed to be here and I don't think F2F could fill Mesa Amp on their own. Fuck yeah. Enjoy Bronx, Cali kids.
