Media: Toh Kay: “Hooray For Me” (Bad Religion)

Streetlight Manifesto frontman Toh Kay is giving away the b-side to last year's "We Will Fall Together" 7-inch, a cover of Bad Religion's "Hooray for Me." The original song appears on the band's 1994 album Stranger Than Fiction. Toh Kay and Streetlight are both releasing their new albums, The Hand that Thieves and The Hands That Thieve respectively, on April 30, 2013.

Stranger Than Fiction is in my top 3 favorite BR cds, but Hooray for Me is probably my least favorite track on it. It seemed like filler to me.

I don't want to be that guy, but are you serious? That record had "Television" on it.

I love that whole album, save for "Television", but "Infected", "Individual" and "What It Is", to me, are all weaker songs than "Hooray For Me".

This song is simultaneously a celebration and distillation of what punk rock meant to a lot of us, while also an outlet for Mr. Brett to deal with his family's past and his drug use. I can understand not preferring it, but to call it "filler" is just wrong. Go read those lyrics. Holy fuck.

This band could have been really cool if they released new material more and tried something different from time to time. I don't want to hear any more cover songs from him or the band. 99 songs of revolution was pure garbage. And the songs they picked had all been covered multiple times.

Funny you should say that, because it seemed to me like with 99 Songs they WERE trying to do something different. You're right, though: it was underwhelming and I'd rather just get some new songs. By the band (or BOTAR), though; none of this solo shit.

Yeah I agree with that with 99 songs they were trying something different. But my thing with that record was like you said it was very overwhelming but also streetlight is a band that a lot of young kids are into and instead of making a cover album full of sounds that kids could get into and discover new bands with they chose sound pretty generic choices. I mean Linoleum and such great heights? I thought the Paul Simon cover was pretty good though.

Yeah it would have been nice to get some cover that were a little more out there. Or more obscure. They should take a page out of NOFX's book--even I hadn't heard of half the bands on their hardcore covers EP.

Can't wait to not be at work so I can hear this. There haven't been enough Bad Religion covers as far as I'm concerned. That covers album that came out at the time of Dissent of Man was really bad aside from one or two of them.

Pretty boring cover, and why does he sound like a 3rd rate Allen Callaci on this track? Love Streetlight, love BR, but just like their Skyscraper cover this is totally underwhelming.
