Interviews: James Lynch of Dropkick Murphys

Q:Hey whats your name, What band are you in, and What do you play/do for them?

A:james lynch, dropkick murphys, rhythm guitar.

Q:How long have you been with the Murphys?

A:going on 5 yrs now.

Q:So what was Warped Tour like? Got any interesting stories?

A:warped tour was very long and hot. not any intersting stories in particular, but it was pretty weird being around so many bands all the time and hanging out with people i probably would never meet otherwise. i made really good friends with one of the guys from andrew w.k.

Q:Where do you prefer to play, small venues- or big ones, like Warped?

A:definitely small venues. i was getting kind of bummed out on this sex pistols tour cuz the places are so big, but we did our own small club show and it was so much fun and got my spirits up again. you just connect better and have a better time all round.

Q:Is it different playing on Warped compared to playing your own shows in a bar or club?

A:very different, playing outside is always a weird thing, i feel like shows should be at night, so playing during the day is very strange for me. and like i said before, smaller venues are more fun because everyone is closer.

Q:So when is the DVD Coming out?

A:....this fall.. i think... maybe.. who knows... soon.. really...

Q:Whats it like playing with the Sex Pistols?

A:amazing, i cant even believe im playing with a band that broke up before i was even born.

Q:After the tour with you guys, the Casualties, Roger Miret and the Disasters whats going on? Is the band headed to the UK?

A:we are taking a break in december to be with our families, weve been going for a pretty long time and just need to stop and catch up on our home lives.

Q:People have been saying (on your own messageboard even!) your new album, "Blackout" is the bands "weakest" album yet. What do you think about that?

A:people can have their opinions, its personally my favorite, and i was a huge fan of the band before i joined.

Q:What is your favorite song to play?

A:dont really have one.

Q:What do you think about MTV, theyll play videos with half naked women running around but smash a beer bottle on someones head and your blacklisted???

A:ya i dont know about that... their weird,

Q:So when are you guys coming to Detroit again, we loved you!

A:hopefully soon, i cant even keep track of our tour dates, when someone tells me to get in the van, im there.. you can check our tour dates section.

I've got a question for all you industry saavy people out there. I know that with major labels, when an artist sells in the very high hundred thousands or millions of copies of an album, a lot of money is made. But what about bands no smaller labels that will rarely ever sell more than 50,000 copies of a cd, let alone 1 or 2 hundred plus? Is money made off of those cds at all? Does the band or the label get more money? I know that bands do make a lot of money off shows, but do labels get any percentage of that? Is there really a lot of money left for smaller bands/labels once all is said and done and they've had to pay for promotion/packaging/recording (even though most bands pay for that)/cd/vinyl pressing and other misc. album fees?

http://www.arancidamoeba.com/mrr/ has some good articles about money and major vs indie, but think a band that only sells 50 grand or less the label probably has spent less on recording and promoting the album(cheaper studios, less advertising, few videos), and therefore can still make a profit by selling less albums than the major label whos artist is selling millions but has spent tons of money on fancy studios, large promotion and advertising(rolling stone and spin cost alot more than punknews) videos, and radio and other, it takes more units sold to recover all those costs.

it really comes down to two things. first, the agreement or contract between the label and the artist. a major label band is usually making less than $1 for every album sold, so thier percentage of a (usually higher priced) sale is pretty low. an indie label can offer as much as 50% and sometimes higher percentage of an album's sales, but can't offer the same publicity. a band can make out better monetarily selling less albums with an indie. second, how well the label lives up to the contract. a major label is much better about cutting royalty checks than indies. vinnie from less than jake, (a band whose gone from indie to major, back to indie, back to major) says that for all the issues that came up between the band and capitol, that's the only label they've worked with that didn't owe them money. contracts with labels can get very complicated though. steve albini wrote

I was lucky to see the guys in Oklahoma city at the dimond ballroom. It was one hell of a show. And the D.K.M.'s were awsome!

i just wanna say that although it may not be my favorite record, i loved blackout. it was fuckin ingeneous, as are all the others by DKM. you guys are my favorite band and you and marc orrell are amazing guitarists. you guys also put on some of the most amazing shows of any band. Dropkick Murphys, along with only a few others, truly revolutionized punk music and ken casey is my fucking idol. his bass lines are smooth and the lyrics he spits out are incomprehensible. not only that, but to be doing that for near a decade and have the crowd just keep growing and growing is just incredible. im looking forward to the next album and hopefully many more from the Dropkick Murphys!!!!!!1
