CNN does a story on Punkvoter movement...

"Hey there fellow armchair revolutionists, CNN has posted their story on punkvoter.com and the impending Rock Against Bush comps. They recently interviewed Fat Mike and it's nice to see the mainstream media starting to recognize the power of an organized group of punk rock kids. I dunno about that three volumes of the Rock Against Bush comp however, that's news to all of us. See the story for yourself."
It might be moot seeing as Diebold (makers of voting machines) is committed to "delivering" votes to the Republicans.

This is one of those bits of incomplete information that I was talking about below.There IS a paper trail. Every touch screen machine here in Alameda County has a register tape that registers the total number of votes per item (ex: John Doe- 3452 votes, John Ashcroft- 0 votes, Proposition 13 yes-0, no-3565, etc.). It's certified as at zero in the morning by the poll workers and certified as at the total poll numbers by the poll workers at night. The register tape and the computer chip with the exact same information are both turned into the local Registrar of Voters along with any absentee or hand-written ("provisional") ballots. At that point, it's up to the humans and their machines to accurately count the ballots. The upshot is, the voting system is only as good as the humans running it. It's always been like that. I will give a review righ now: It isn't what you expect upon first listen but you listen to it again and you are like holy shit! Perhaps a little short, but they leave you wanting more. It is the same overall sound as their last album but more electric guitars, and it reminds me a lot of their live show. It is great plain and simple. Whoo! P.S.- The voting machine thing is a lot more complicated than that. A lot of the hysteria (at least that's how it comes out here in Berkeley) about the new touch-screen voting machines is based on incomplete information and scary "what if" scenarios. I've actually worked as a polling place supervisor the last 2 elections with the touch screen machines here in Alameda County (i.e. most of the "East Bay"), and the only mistakes/flaws I've seen have been human-based- as in poll workers doing the wrong thing. I DO think that the source code should be open for the voting software, even though that increases the bugs/hacker potential. The concurrent rise in outside evaluation would more then counterbalance the negatives. I could go on, but I won't here right now. Maybe in my next AMP column. Maybe not.

Thanks for posting that link. That's a decent article, but it's still based mostly on "what ifs" rather than concrete facts. The whole "paper trail" issue I cover in a post somewhere else in this thread. There still seems to be a moderate amount of hysteria about this issue without much looking at the basic facts surrounding this issue. I was surprised that the Georgia election which was screwed up by an early version of these machines wasn't part of the article. The bugs are allegedly fixed, but without open source, one cannot confirm this unless the identical problems occur again. I think that the number one concern is the same with every election- the human factor. The article points out that each technological advance in voting systems is accompanied by this kind of hysteria. Sometimes it's accurate and the problems are fixed, sometimes the forecast problems do not occur. Eit

Great point. When Conservaties cry "Liberal Media" it makes me wonder what they think of most British news papers that are far more left than ours. Especially in a time of war. All we had was pro-war commentary and ex-generals talking strategy and shit like that. Atleast in the UK where the support for war was about 50% they covered the other stories. Like the largest protests in the history of mankind. Where was the "Liberal Media" in America on these issues? Hey homeboy. Capitalism is not a political system. Democracy is a political system. Disagreeing with Republicans doesn't make you anti-capitalist, it makes you pro-democracy. Capitalism is defined as a economic system based on the accumulation of capital and the investment of the capital into labour. It has very little to do with Republicans or Democrats. The logic behind the "success" of the war on terrorism is pretty suspect too. The fact that America hasn't been attacked could be a result of any number of things, not necessarily the war on terrorism.

There is little information pointing to the fact that after 9/11 we would be under contant attack anymore than there was prior to it. The only reason we're more at risk is because this war has inflamed the middle east (not to mention many of our allies) and answered the prayers of the likes of Bin Laden. You make a good point that opposition to capitalism usually consists of lazy people. Capitalism is about survival and Socialism is about unity.. well, basically society. After 19 years, I have yet to choose a side. Both have their advantages. A more cohesive society would definitely promote community and would likely be less hate-filled. On the other hand, hard-workers should be rewarded for their work and lazy people should not be. It's only fair. Also, survival is a part of life, duh. And socialism would institute a government with a lot of control and with control comes corruption. I actually think that the current state of the U.S. is ok. It's kind of a balance. this isn't about capitalism or conservatism. Its about a president who lied to his country so he could invade Irag, for his and his associates own gain. Its about a president who is playing on Americans emotions by stating that the only way to avenge 9/11 is to invade arab nations. Which is faulty reasons. Anyone with common sense sees that this war on terrorism is just going to create more terrorists. Because most terrorists exist because a) America killed someone in their family either through sanctions or military action or b) because America is invading their holy lands. And since 9/11 we've been doing a lot more of both. Its also about a president who wants to spend $87 billion in another counrty. Meanwhile there is people in America with no way to pay for Healthcare. There are hundreds of thousands of people out of jobs. And we have shitty educational system
