Nick let me know about an article in the New York Times about the burgeoning conservative punk movement. You have to register with the times to read the whole thing. Of note is an inclusionary quote from unabashed liberal, Ian MacKaye who says "Punk is a free space where anything can go - a series of actions and reactions, and people rebelling and then rebelling against rebelling."

I can't say I agree with his politics, but Nick is a decent and rational guy. I'll hear out any self-described conservative, but I draw the line at anti-choicers and homophobes. Fiscal conservatives and libertarians are fine, but I need someone to explain the difference between 'social conservative' and 'guy who can't mind his own damn business.' 8+ Replies

You can believe whatever u want.....but one thing that cannot EVER be conservative is punk rock.....conservative punk rock can't exist because the primary sound and lyrical content of punk rock is anti-conservative....conservative punk would just be lame jock rock or metal. It's an oxymoron. Oh...and just ot keep the record straight, fuck conservatives (and that means republicans AND democratic conservatives- ie Joe Leiberman, Tipper Gore) 12+ Replies

There aren't too many real opinions on that site. IT seems to be a lot of "All liberal punks are robots." and "John Kerry wants Sadaam back in power." The sad thing is that neither side addresses the other's good points. For example, liberals addressing Kerry's positions on healthcare and the conservatives adressing the loss of civil rights under the Patriot Act. 6+ Replies

On a somewhat related note, I really want to check out that book Against All Enemies by Richard Clarke... I saw the special about it on 60 minutes yesterday and it talks about how Bush totally dropped the ball on dealing with terrorism prior to 9/11 and after 9/11 by going to war with Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. 2+ Replies

Punk is about questioning the establishment - and right now anyone who does that and concludes that the establishment is doing an objectively good job is simply an idiot. I have no problem with people who believe in conservative policies (which sometimes include tax cuts, bombing other countries, etc.), but to conclude that THIS administration at THIS time is doing a "good" job is beyond absurd. It's like trying to rationalize hate speech - some people try to do it, but at the end of the day there's just no excuse for it... the harm outweighs any possible gain. 3+ Replies

How can a conservative make punk rock? Punk rock is by nature loud, aggressive and questions the powers that be. Being aconservative is to strongly support the powers that be or to actually be part of that power. Basically these bands would be making music that had musaical "punk" qualities but not lyrics....just like public enemy have punk rock lyrics but are rappers. Republicans are the worst kind of facists...his is due to the fact that they play the bigotry game very quietly and disguise as other things. Instead of a Republican saying something like "I hate N*ggers", they will just cut off welfare to minorities an help create the economic prison we are currently enrolled in. They'll make it illegal for us to make offensive music, rather than hazing and making fun of people the way their police and redneck supporters do. It's their way of bending the system, I never wanna hear "why am i a facist, I'm just a republican" again....if you are a republican you, whether you know it or not, are helping our government kill people (both here and over seas), supporting the religious right and supporting quasi-racism. i'm sick of people saying that punk can be anything. if you say that the concept of 'punk' can include anything and everything, it ceases to have any meaning. if you can agree that the most 'real' kind of punk was the original punks of '77, since they started it, you would see that from the beginning it didn't include conservatives. sex pistols-not conservative. the clash-not conservative. new york dolls-a band of fucking drag queens. don't tell me that was conservative. at the most, punk is apolitical, like the ramones. but conservative or right-wing so-called 'punks' like skrewdriver twisted the scene for their own purposes. punk is about accepting the misfits of society, and being progressive. conservatives reject people on the "fringes" such as poor minorities or gays or single mothers and want to keep things the way they are or if they're reactionary they want to turn back the clo show rest of comment 6+ Replies

I am a firm believer in anarcho-syndicalism, but I really don't think politics make much of a difference when it comes to the punk scene. The punk scene is about the music (or at least it should be).... if you don't agree with what a band is saying, start your own and say what you want. Or get into politics. Everyone is bitching and moaning about how conservative punks are killing the punk scene, but last time I checked, the punk scene wasn't really alive. GOPunk doesn't encourage you to think any more than PunkVoter does. Seriously, think for yourself. I, for one, don't want to be a pawn in anybody's power struggle. first of all, most US oil does not come from the middle east. secondly, the country with the most oil reserves is saudi arabia. thirdly, saudi arabia does not send as much oil as it is capable of doing so in an effort to control prices. iraq, although it does have a considerable amount of oil, is not a major source os US oil. lastly, OPEC controls only 25% of the worlds oil. now saying the war with iraq is 100% about oil then you are sadly uninformed. why would a country go to war with another country over oil when that country doesnt even rank in the top 10 trading partners for oil? If a country were to go to war with another country then why not go to war with Saudi Arabia? Therefore the argument that the war with iraq is 100% about oil is a completely erroneous. 4+ Replies

I also realized everything that is bad for us is suspiciously good for the rich. polluting ecosystems (which I used to think was no big deal), polluting our minds with public schools set up to conform us into a uniform, socially accpetable mindset, wars, nuclear arms proliferation, social programming via corporate propaganda (commercials/advertisements) set up to break us down and show rest of comment 4+ Replies

"Well that's the sound of freedom, son" he said.
(Free to say no more.)
