Action Toolbelt's upcoming self-titled release will be the first of its kind, playing in standard CD players, while allowing unrestricted access to the same music digitally encoded on the enhanced CD. All songs are encoded as MP3 and AAC formats in high quality (192kbps) Unlike paid songs downloaded from iTunes or Napster, the files come with no built-in tracking or restrictions. The new Fastmusic release will be in stores May 4, 2004.
Fastmusic has stated that they are taking a firm stance against the RIAA and their scare tactics, and is determined to prove that overpriced CDs, not file-sharing, is the reason for the decline in major label CD sales. The label believes that users have the right transfer, burn, copy, or do whatever they want with music that they have purchased, whether on CD or downloaded on the net. Fastmusic (31 comments)

Besides Fastmusic doing all that cool stuff with the digital files, this disc is actually really good. It's very much in the vein of 90s Alternative Nation style, especially Superchunk. Not trendy stuff at all

"determined to prove that overpriced CDs, not file-sharing, is the reason for the decline in major label CD sales" that and the fact that most major label music is watered down, over produced bullshit. . . for instance. . . this was posted on the web somewhere. Its pretty incredible: "So I received tremendous joy when I found the following file over on the SA Forums. Some internet genius took Nickelback's first horrible "hit," and mixed it with Nickelback's newest awful "hit." By "mixed" I mean one shitty song plays in the left speaker, and the other ear-bleeding excuse for rock plays in the right speaker. What a surprise, they are almost EXACTLY THE SAME. It's uncanny, sad, and hilarious at the same time." http://www.nintendorks.com/brandon/temp/nickelbacksucks .mp3 5+ Replies

I know, I know, some of you will say "oh, it's just Fastmusic, pfft." But hey, everything starts somewhere. So fat we have Go-Kart and Fastmusic, hopefully other labels will see this, and the wheels will begin turning.

this is retarded. how is this different than putting the cd in your computer and hitting "import" in itunes? you save 45 seconds of rip time. get back to me when you do something that's actually cool. all fastmusic did was waste extra money paying for the data tracks to be mastered onto the cd so they could get a news story out of it. 5+ Replies

"The label believes that users have the right [to] do whatever they want with music that they have PURCHASED..." Ha Ha Ha, what a fucking cop-out! This label wants you to do anything you want with music, but it has to be music you purchase! This statement cannot in any way be construed to say, "We tolerated all unrestricted music downloads." Yet, another way to sound 'indie-cool' by theoretically tolerating downloading without actually doing so... Kids, read between the fucking lines. No goddamn music label, indie or major would tolerate unrestricted music downloads (i.e. file sharing). That might be great for the bands, who get noticed. But not for the record labels, whose biggest revenue stream is, yes, CD sales. ***el_provocateur*** 1+ Reply
