Larry Arms' Brendan Kelly on The Daily Show this week

Brendan Kelly from The Lawrence Arms will be on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart this week. The episode featuring him may air as early as tonight (Tuesday). Here's a bit of his update from the band's website:

Speaking of politics...Ed Helms interviewed me last week for a feature on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" about conservative punks. I think that it turned out pretty well, even though I think I might have been a little harsh. Those conservative punks really drive me nuts though. Pick up the new AP and read how Nick Rizzuto, founder of conservativepunk.com lists the DECEASED (!) Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys as one of their "team members" (okay, you can't just assume that a dead person would be down with your organization because of the general politics that they had when they were alive. By this logic, they could also list Nixon, Pontius Pilate and Sonny fucking Bono)...

You can see his whole comment on the band's website, including generous use of the work "douche." The band also announced that their song on the second volume of the Rock Against Bush compilation will be titled "Necrotism: Decanting the Insalubrious (cyborg midnight) Part 7." Brendan says it sounds like "AFI and Coheed and Cambria playing Dungeons and Dragons together (with just a hint of ska)." I suggest you take that with a grain of salt.

It's a great word. It lacks harsh consonants so it seems so delicate and flowery, yet on further reflection, it's so gross and harsh. I think it's my favourite obscenity.

Not really. With any system of government, there's going to be a ruling elite, and even if we went to a (just as an extreme example) a communist society, who do you think would be the ruling class? The same people who are now. They'll still have all the pull, and even though people may be more equal underneath them, there'll be no chance for advancement. And if you can't rise above your current station in life, what's the point of doing anything?

And in a communist society they would be gone, like the kulaks in tsarist russia were abolished by stalin. Of course, i would not support communism, as it obviously does not work, but a less autothoriesd was of life would be better in my view. Sorry about the awful spelling.

I believe in the right of everyone to work as hard as they can and claw their way to the top, no matter who they are. I don't believe they should have a hand up just because of the past. I'd rather be completely colorblind, and I think society would be a lot better off because of it. How's that for open-minded?

I considering myself a libertarian and a punk, and I do listen to punk bands that have leftist leanings, because I'm comfortable enough with my beliefs to not be offended by that, but if it came to having to choose between a seemingly more and more elitist group like punks and my political beliefs, I'd drop the punks in a second.

It just seems that music is usualy about progression, and conservitism is well, about non-progression. That's my take on it anyway. But the two don't have much inter-linkage besides that, which isn't really universal anyway. I think conservitives are all wrong. I don't care if your punk or not. you can be a conservitive punk, But I'll judge you more on the word conservitive, as I see no relationship between that and "punk".

I also find it scary that some people are getting too smart. My local mechanic can't even fix my dad's car because it has computer chips in it or something. He has to take it back to the dealer and a specialist has to do it. I guess it's kind of the same thing as what you said about me "thinking I'm better than everyone else" but I just feel that I'm getting smarter by going to school, reading, and paying attention to the world around me that it astonishes me when I open up the paper like the NY Post (which is the most widely circulated paper in the city) and the Pro-choice march article is a blurb on page 8 and the headline on the front page says, "Billie Joel crashes brand new car!" That's kind of what Brendan's article was about. We all have 1 vote but do we really want some of these people making decisions for us?

well i went up to Glasgow (which is about 3 hours away) to get told by the knuckle dragging doormen that i couldn't come in because i said "fuck".....so a waste of £10 on a ticket, a waste of £25 to get a bus up there and most of all i didn't get to see my favourite band.
