Challenge of the PogoBots

News

You'll recall the dancing punk robots we discussed a week ago. The `bots, controlled by a neural network and trained to love classic punk rock, were exhibited recently at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. The BBC now has video of the pogoing killbots robots in action. In their article on the news organization also details the some of the science behind the project.

The robots were created by artist Fiddian Warman, whose team based their adaptive artificial intelligence on on processes that take place in real biology. Warman formed a punk band for the exhibit dubbed Neurotic and the PVCs featuring guitarist Andrew Tweedie (Menace), drummer Chris Bashford (Chelsea) and bassist Rob Bartram (Chester). The band, along with a pair of openers, played for an audience of humans and robots this past weekend.

Bad Taste details Joey Cape's "Bridge"

Bad Taste Records

Bad Taste Records has posted the cover art and track listing for Bridge, the new acoustic effort from Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape. Click below for the details.. The record hits stores on September 29th of this year. Cape previously commented:

The strange part of all this is, now that it is done, I'm not sure how to feel. It is my first attempt at making a solo record, something I am totally unfamiliar with. I know this, I will never make a record this way again. From now on, no second guessing or obsessing. Ultimately, I am proud of this record. I made something I like and it's time to move on. I hope most of you will appreciate it. I have decided to call it "Bridge". I think the musical metaphor is appropriate because it is something new for me and it will lead me to another place as a songwriter, weather it be a better appreciation of my craft or the butt of another songwriter's joke. Either way, I'm on my way.

Bright Eyes, David Bazan, Wilco on Net Neutrality compilation
Posted by aubin on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM (EDT)
Politics

A number of musicians have contributed music to a new compilation that aims to raise money to fight for Net Neutrality. The subject has been the subject of vigorous debate over the past year or so, with neutrality proponents arguing that all websites on the Internet should receive equal treatment while internet providers argue that they should be able to charge to prioritize traffic, thereby creating a first and second class of websites. One major concern of net neutrality proponents is that this will homogenize the Internet into a cable-style environment where only mainstream content will be able to pay the ISP's fees while niche websites in music, technology and politics will be sidelined.

You can stream and purchase the album here.

Polls: Record company boss urges bands to avoid labels entirely

News

Alan McGee, the man responsible for signing two of England's most popular bands - Oasis and The Libertines - has come out strongly against record labels. McGee, who was also the boss of Creation and Poptones Records spoke to XFM saying:

I'd recommend a band not to go to any record label, I think they're all fucking rubbish. You're better off doing it yourself. They're living in the past, it's like owning a tram company or something.

You can find the rest of the interview here.

So what do you think? We've set up a poll for you to let us know.

Pete Wentz responds to Gym Class Heroes incident
Posted by aubin on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 2:00 PM (EDT)
Decaydance

Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, who also runs Decaydance has responded to the arrest of Decaydance act Gym Class Heroes in St.Louis in his blog.

You know what? You call my friend a “n_gger”, I dont even give a fuck what happens to you. I dont want to see you in this scene. I dont want to see you at shows. You are who we write songs about. You are who we think about when we hate. Radiohead, "Karma Police" over and over again in my head.

What a joke. You are fucking pathetic and anyone that disagrees should put their white hood on too. I don't want your ticket money. I don't want your cd sales. Id rather be poor and unknown.

I wasn’t there and all I have to go on is the account of one of my best friends and all I ever want to do is support them. There is no further need for me to blow this out of proportion. I hate hearing people called that word. It makes me cringe. Thats all. Kind of like at the end of the Chapelle show when people were laughing at the racist jokes rather than at the satire of them.

Gym Class Heroes lead singer Travis McCoy was arrested last night in St. Louis, MO on one charge of third-degree assault. The band was just one song into their Warped Tour set when an audience member called McCoy a racial slur. McCoy responded by alledgedly hitting the assailant with his microphone.
