Actually, that's not quite what it means. It's more along the lines of rap guest vocals: they'll have a vocalist they're friends with come in a drop a verse or two. It's still pretty pointless unless the vocal styles are radically different. But there is a difference between "gang vocals" and "guest vocalists".
