Your songs will still be on your computer, but your library is useless. Just add the songs back into your library and all will be well.

okay, this happened to me at the beginning of the year. i'm not sure on all your details, but it happened to me when i accidentally unplugged my ipod early after i put some new songs on it.
to fix it, i downloaded a new program that got all my songs successfully off my ipod and put them on my computer. i think it was called sharepod, or something close to that, google it if you need more info. after i backed up all my songs i restored my ipod's factory settings, then put all the songs back on it. hope that helps some.

Awesome! thanks people, I think the sharepod thing is what I need. I would all my songs again but they are scattered all over my computer so it would be a very tedious job. Again, thank you to all of you.

I would delete the offending playlist file, then, using the older back up file, re add your songs to new playlists with in that file from your library. The songs are there, just not in your playlist. You can get to them form the iTunes folder in "My Music."

    Hope this helps.
