There's much speculation that he didn't even receive a fair trial, not to mention that many of the prosecution's "witnesses" have since revised their stories.

I'd say exactly the opposite of what you just said: this is one of the LEAST legit cases of its imposition since there is now more than enough reasonable doubt as to whether he even did it.

BTW, I normally wouldn't link to a Wiki article, but it's a former featured article with a shitload of references, so it seems to be on the up-and-up.
